1 October 16-17, 2017 Objectives: Compose AP-style thematic statements.
Analyze literary fiction for theme. Catalyst: Turn in Grad Project Portfolio Make sure you have your thematic statement ready for peer-editing Homework & Reminders: Final Johnny Got His Gun bootcamp due 10.18/ Rubric on my website. Native Son assessment 11/8-11/9 (annotated novel, composition book, and MWDS due)

2 Explication Notes: Stop italicizing poem titles
Writing line by line or stanza by stanza doesn't automatically = explication You don't have to use all the devices, but you should explore several Always end by explaining the greater implication of the devices/elements on the work as a whole (poetry MOWAW the POWAW!) Going line by line is something you should do in your head/annotations, not literally in the response (don't say: "In line 1 this happens. In line 2 this happens...etc.") Absolutely no personal opinion or pronouns Refer to authors by their last names; you're not buddies Please use me as a resource! Explication is NOT analysis. It can be much more difficult to explicate. Ask me for clarification, or read the pages to which I’ve referred you in Perrine’s! You are NOT explicating if you: just explaining what the poem SAYS tell me that the poem utilizes figurative language, diction, and tone (for example) but then spend your whole response elaborating on those elements as they're seen in the entire text
