An introduction to BA (Hons) History of Art at The Courtauld Dr Jo Applin Head of BA Admissions

BA (Hons) History of Art 300 + applications Intake circa 75 students Expert coverage of a wide-range of art history from antiquity to the present Geographical range extends from Byzantium to early modern Islamic world and Renaissance Europe to contemporary China. Courtauld BA degree is uniquely designed to give you the opportunity to engage with the full breadth of art history, while also specialising in areas of particular interest. Focus on small group teaching Commitment to close examination of individual works YEAR 1 Foundations course - provides a broad coverage of the history of art 2 x Topic Courses - first-hand study of original works of art (groups of 8-10) Language course (normally French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Mandarin)

Year Two Autumn and Spring terms: Frameworks for Interpretation introduction to key methodologies that inform art historical interpretation 2 x 1hr lecture and 1 x 2hr discussion class in alternating weeks Constellations courses Investigate art history through examination of a specific historical movement, geographic region or artistic medium Constellation lectures (2 x 1.5hr per week). Max of 15 students. Constellation seminars (1x 2hr small-group seminar classes per week) Students are encouraged to attend 2x further lectures per week Summer term: 4,000-word assessed essay and end of year exams

Year Three Autumn and Spring terms: Lessons in Interpretation Builds on critical knowledge acquired in Frameworks for Interpretation through intense engagement with individual case studies 2 x 1hr lecture and 1 x 2hr discussion class in alternating weeks Special Options small group seminars designed to engage with materials and methods at an advanced-level to equip students for further study or research 2 x 2hr seminar classes per week Constellations lectures - students are encouraged to attend up to 3 x lectures Summer term: Complete research and writing up of a 5,000-word essay. This is an opportunity for you to carry out detailed research in an area you are passionate about.

Entry requirements A-levels Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Diploma with two A grades at A-Level alongside the Core Certificate at Level 3. Standard offer is AAB (excluding General Studies) Admissions tutors are flexible on subjects studied, International Baccalaureate - a minimum 35 points, including a score of at least 6 in Group 1, 3 and 6. Where a student is completing two A-Levels in practical art subjects, a fourth A-Level is required to accommodate for overlap of course content. Cambridge Pre-U - D3, D3, M2 in three Principal Subjects GCSE - Grade A-C in a European language is desirable but not required. BTECH – DDM Scottish Highers - AAAAB or AAABB, usually supplemented by two or more Advanced Highers. Offers made to candidates on the basis of the Advanced Higher subjects are likely to be set at AA for two subjects, and AAB for three subjects. Access to Humanities Diploma at Level 3 (39 Level 3 credits from units awarded at Distinction, with the remaining credits at Merit). English language - please refer to website
