Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) Was Dutch but his most famous paintings are in France As an impressionist- strong sense of light & color Did not only paint what he saw- wanted to express his feelings: exaggerated intensity of colors & gave movement to inanimate objects Starry Night- looks like a hallucination

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) He abandoned his normal life to travel Lived a simple life but traveled to many exotic places such as: Martinique and Tahiti Loved to paint pictures of beautiful exotic women in the places he visited

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (24th November 1864- 9 September 1901) Bohemian artist born into aristocratic family Many health issues to the climax at age 14. Accident while riding a horse- effectively crippling him Art was his coping mechanism- eventually studied at L’école des Beaux Arts in Paris Frequented cafés, cabarets, and music halls (Moulin Rouge) Died at the age of 36 due to health problems and alcoholism

Henri Matisse Before he was a inventive painter, he was lawyer. He started painting when he got sick and had to stay at home, when he found his true calling of painting and left his old job. He is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century and had many different styles, but founded the Fauvism movement , which was the use of bright colors and shapes. He mostly did paintings, but he also did sculptures, collages, and comics. When he got older and terminally ill and lost use of his hands, he attached paintbrushes to his forearms to continue his passion of painting
