4 Vincent Van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh was an expressionist What expression does this piece have? No I don’t know what Vincent Van Gogh did with his ear. Post-Impressionism

5 Edvard Munch A Norwegian painter that worked in paint, lithography, etching, and wood engraving. His life was filled with death and illness and gave him a very bleak perspective of life. His mother, sister, his father, brother, other sister, aunt would die all die during his lifetime His own life would be plagued by illness. In 1902 a love affair would end, taking a piece of Edvard Munch’s finger with it. In 1908 Edvard Munch would have a nervous breakdown and be hospitalized. During this time he would receive electroshock treatment. He is known for painting imagery of death, sickness, relationships, and anxiety. Much of his work paints a bleak picture of life using muted colors, distortions, and deep symbolism.

8 Kathe Kollwitz This German Expressionist used her artwork to protest the horrors and despairs of the world wars. She strived to speak for the poor and disenfranchised in he work using the most inexpressive medium of the time, printmaking. She married a doctor who would in some of the poorest slums of Berlin work with many of the injured during the war. Allowing her to see all the children who would lose their parents in the wars. She was the first woman elected a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts. She lost one son in World War I and another in World War II. When Hitler came to power (1933) she was forced to resign from the Prussian Academy of Arts.

11 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German expressionist who help found the expressionist group “The Bridge.” He is known for his angular and elongated shapes with bright clashing colors He often painted images of the city of Berlin, particularly its women, but he portrayed it in a tense and uneasy way His work would be branded degenerate in 1933 by the Nazis.

12 Emile-Antoine Bourdelle A French painter and sculptor known for his busts of human faces who was overshadowed by his teacher and mentor Augeste Rodin His sculptor often portrays powerful emotions complemented by exaggerations and distortions Bourdelle often did heroic or mythical subject matter He is best known for his busts of Beethoven

13 Franz Marc A German artist known for his brightly colored images of animals. He was first inspired by Impressionist work Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky were the founders of “The Blue Rider” group. Franz pulled considerable inspiration from the Cubism and Futurist art movements, hence his use of fragmentation and geometric shapes. Franz Marc was killed during the fighting of World War I.
