The Mongols Ruled over China between 1271-1368 Transformed Chinese society Only Mongols could have the highest government positions Cultural blending Got rid of the Confucian Exam

The Ming Dynasty Restored traditional Chinese rule Confucian values, exam Wanted to erase Mongol past Expanded China through expansionist policy

The Ming Dynasty Voyages of Zheng He 7 expeditions sent by the Chinese to collect tribute and display Chinese power. 62 larger vessels, hundreds of smaller ones SE Asia, India, Africa Voyages ended abruptly because they were too expensive and the Chinese viewed their own society as superior

The Ming Dynasty Constructed the Forbidden City – Palace complex, center of political power Accessible only to the elite of society

The Ming Dynasty Peasant rebellions would eventually destabilize the Ming and lead them to look for help from their northern neighbors, the Manchus

The Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) The Manchu overthrew the Ming and established a new dynasty. To identify the rebels, the government ordered all males to shave their foreheads and braid their hair into a pigtail called a queue.

The Qing Dynasty The Canton System only allowed traders a few months access to China’s trade and only under government supervision. The Chinese had no desire for European goods – forced to pay in gold and silver

Tokugawa Japan 1603-1867 Tokugawa Ieyasu was able to control the daimyo and establish a shogunate. Moved the capital to Edo (present-day Tokyo) Hostage system – controlled the daimyo by forcing their families to live in Edo where they could be controlled
