Nutritional Labelling Compliance 2016 9.30am Introduction to SFS and the CBA partnership.

How to ensure that you comply The law What products are covered Exemptions from the law What information is needed How should it be declared Where does the information come from Why are we here – this is what we’re going to cover ....

The Law

Food Information to Consumers Regulation CURRENTLY Nutritional declaration is voluntary UNLESS a nutrition claim is made Must be in the correct format Same piece of legislation as the new allergen requirements that came into force in December 2014 Up until this point a nutrition declaration was always voluntary UNLESS a nutrition claim was made on the food. So, if you currently have a nutrition claim on your product such as ‘Low fat’ or ‘Low salt’, you must declare your nutritional information AND it must be in the correct format. We will cover this in a few moments time. If you are voluntarily declaring nutrtional info and it is in the correct format, there are further no changes required for December 2016.

13th December 2016 A nutrition declaration will be compulsory for pre-packed foods. Per 100g or 100ml is compulsory Per serving information is voluntary

Format Tabular or linear format

Minimum of 1.2mm Size of font If largest surface area of the product is <80cm2 then this can be reduced to 0.9mm

Exemptions

Exemptions Unpackaged foods sold directly to caterers or final consumers.

Exemptions Foods packed on the same site that they are sold

Exemptions Manufacturers supplying small quantities to final consumer or local retailer Definition of small is yet to be defined. Size of business? Within county or neighbouring county or a 30 mile radius This may change as there is expected to be a clarification statement from the DoH. The size of the business as defined by the number of employees and/or turnover SMALL LOCAL

Exemptions Foods where the largest surface area of the packaging is less than 25cm2 For those of you who haven’t studied maths recently!!! Largest side to be measured

The Declaration

Compulsory & Voluntary Nutrients NUTRITIONAL DATA Per 100ml/g Per serving Energy kJ / kcal Fat g of which   Saturates Mono-unsaturates Polyunsaturates Carbohydrate Sugars Polyols Starch Fibre Protein Salt Vitamins and minerals Specified units Bold are COMPULSORY, others are voluntary Figures must be in the units specified and in this order. For voluntary figures, you can chose one or all. If you are making a claim, you must include the nutrient you are making the claim for. Eg. Fibre. Vitamins and minerals must be in significant quantity to include = greater than 15% of RI Per serving can also be added but must always have the per 100g/ml values. Must declare what a portion or unit is, near to the information given. Eg A serving = 1 slice,

Other Nutritional Information GDA’s Traffic light labelling RI’s GDA’s now have been replaced with RI’s - these can be repeated in the principle field of vision – i.e the front of the pack

The Origin of the Data

Where does the data come from? Chemical analysis of a typical product Send product away to a laboratory to be analysed. Can be expensive especially if there are multiple products. Chemical analysis is not compulsory

Where does the data come from? Manufacturers nutritional data No additional cost Must be as described and not with additional ingredients. For example bake off products Need to ensure that if you add anything, was this included or do you have do re-do the nutrition. Eg. If you decide to add a glaze to the product or to decorate it in some way that will change the nutritional data.

Calculated figures More cost effective From established data McCance and Widdowson FDA data More cost effective
