2 Timeline March 2014 – Initial Proposed Rule – Comment period through June 2014 July 2015 – Supplemental Proposed Rule – Comment period through October 2015 Final Rule published May 27, 2016 – Goes into effect July 26, 2016

3 Overview of Main Changes Nutrients – how they’re listed, which ones – Changes to how some are tested Format – layout will change – Still recognizable Serving Sizes – “more realistic” – Some increased, some decreased, some new

4 Changes to Nutrient Listings Information on added sugars – Proposed Daily Value of 50g for adults Must include Potassium and Vitamin D are now required Vitamins A and C no longer required, can list voluntarily Calories From Fat removed, no longer allowed on label Daily Values for some nutrients are being changed – Sodium decreased – Vitamin D, Dietary Fiber increased

5 Changes to Format Larger font size for some nutrients – Calories, Servings per Container, Serving Size – Bold font for Calories, Serving Size Actual amount (g or mg) for vitamin D, calcium, iron and potassium must be listed – Actual amount for other vitamins and minerals is voluntary New Footnote: “*The % Daily Value tells you how much a nutrient in a serving of food contributes to a daily diet. 2,000 calories a day is used for general nutrition advice.”

Rule goes into effect July 26, 2016 – Cannot use new format until then Large companies must comply by July 26, 2018 – Greater than $10 million in sales per year Small companies must comply by July 26, 2019 – Less than $10 million in sales per year Very small companies will still be exempt from listing nutrition facts – If they have NFP on label, it must be new format by 2019
