6th Grade SS: Friday, March 3, 2017 Handouts: * None Assignments: * In-class—Discuss “culture” Analyze “ABCs of Culture” posters * Homework—Start working on ABCs of Culture posters Posters are due Monday, March 13 Assignments due today: * None Bell-ringer: BR, #3, 3/03/2017 Q = What religion is practiced by 75% of Arab Americans? A = Christianity

Today’s Goal: Learn to how to answer and illustrate, “What is culture Outcomes: Define the term “culture.” Use an ABCs mnemonic to identify 10 ways a society expresses culture. Analyze culture posters for strengths and weaknesses. Create your own ABCs culture poster (at home) as a project.

Southwest Asia: What is the “Arab world” like? Starter #1: On Wednesday we introduced a new unit: Southwest Asia: What is the “Arab world” like? It’s important to have guiding questions that direct us in exploring. Here are our four “Essential (Guiding) Questions”: E.Q. #1 Who is an Arab and what do we mean by “the Arab world”? E.Q. #2 What misconceptions (false ideas) do people have about the Arab world? E.Q. #3 What is culture and what are the cultural elements that tie together the Arab world? E.Q. #4 What factors affect how Arab nations and Arab people groups relate to other nations?

Starter #2: Have we learned anything yet about E.Q. #1, which is . . . Who is an Arab and what do we mean by “the Arab world”? One of the first things that ties people groups together is their language. What language do Arabs speak? Arabic When we say, “the Arab world,” what are we talking about? Nations around that world that speak predominantly Arabic. How many Arabic nations are there today, Arabic speaking countries? 22 Those countries are: Algeria, Bahrain, the Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. What helps more, seeing words or seeing a picture?

Starter #3: Here are the 22 Arab nations, the “Arab world.” What patterns do you notice? Where are the Arab countries located?

Starter #4: Yesterday we learned a little bit about EQ # 2 What misconceptions (false ideas) do people have about the Arab world? To be more specific . . . What is one misconception people have about Arab Americans? Religion is one important part of culture, which leads us to EQ #3: What is culture? and What cultural elements tie together the Arab world? So how can we define culture? Culture is all the ways a society expresses what they value. Here is a trick, a way to make culture as easy as knowing your ABC’s.  Turn to your first handout, “Defining the ABCs of Culture.”

Starter #5: Analyzing ABCs of Culture posters Now turn to your Rubric handout. What is the purpose of a rubric? The key to getting a good grade on a project is how well you follow these requirements. So let’s look at this carefully. There’s one more thing that helps students get a good grade on a project. I’m going to show you some samples of Culture Posters. Sometimes it helps to see what other students have done. As I show you each of the following posters, ask yourself, is this a good poster or a poor poster? If it’s good, what makes it good? If it’s not as good as the others, what is lacking? Ask yourself, “Did that person follow the rubric directions?”
