Chem Vocab For your FLASH-CARDS

element Purest form of matter. Has its own unique traits and properties

Atom Smallest Division of matter that has all the properties of that element

Chemical bond Term used to describe how elements combine by either sharing (Covalent) or transferring electrons (ionic)

Molecule Term used to describe when two or more atoms join. Gives compound its own unique properties (example: water)

Compound Term used to Describe a two or more elements join and is uniform throughout. (SOLIDS, Salt, Sugar)

Chemical Formula Technical way in showing how elements join up in either a compound or solution. Gives you the exact ratio of elements in the substance (H2O )

Mixture Term used to describe when two or more substances are combined BUT ARE NOT CHEMICALLY JOINED (salt n pepper, chex mix)

Heterogenous Mixture When two or more items are combined and are not CHEMICALLY joined but is NOT uniform throughout (chocolate milk, cereal and milk)

Homogeneous Mixture When two or more items are combined but are not CHEMICALLY JOINED but is UNIFORM throughout (white milk)

Solution Term used to describe when a solid is dissolved within a liquid. (Salt Water, Kool Aid)

Matter Anything that has mass and is found as a Solid, Liquid, or gas

Chemistry Study of the composition of matter, its structure and how it reacts with other matter

Pure Substance A compound that has NO impurities. Exactly the same throughout : (bowl of sugar)

Physical Property Describes matter based on how your senses “see” it. (Can be changed back if changed)

Chemical Property Describes how a substance reacts to another substance (can’t be undone)
