Self Esteem The strongest factor of success is Self-EsteEM. Believing you can do it, Believing you deserve it, And Believing you will get it!!!

Definition Self Esteem: A feeling of having respect for yourself and your abilities. A confidence and satisfaction in ones self.

How would you rate your Self Esteem? 1 2 3 Strongly agree Unsure Strongly Disagree 1. How I feel about myself is more important than others' opinions of me. 2. If someone ever falls in love with me, I better do my best to prove myself worthy, because it may never happen again. 3. I have what it takes to socialize with other people.

What are ways to boost self esteem? Tryout for a team Join a club Start a study group Participate in the choir or band Add a PE or extra fitness class Try giving a compliment a day to others Giving service Practice positive self talk Students and individuals who are involved in activities and develop hobbies are more likely to have higher self esteem.

Are you your worst critic? Negative thinking you may be guilty of….. ALL or NOTHING thinking: You see things as either all good or all bad. Mental Filtering: You see only negatives and dwell on them, distorting your view of a person or situation. Converting: Rejecting your own achievements and other positive experiences Ex. “ I only did good because that test was easy.” Jumping to Negative conclusions: Reaching a negative conclusion when there is little evidence. Ex. “My friend didn’t text me back yet, she must be mad at me.”

Positive thinking Use hopeful statements: Treat yourself with kindness. If you say or think your going to do well you will. Forgive yourself: Learn to laugh at yourself. We all make mistakes. “Mistakes aren’t you as a person they are isolated moments in time.” Encourage yourself: Give your self credit for making positive changes. This also involves rewarding yourself. Set goals and as you accomplish them award yourself.

What can contribute to your overall self esteem? Family relationships Goal setting in place Have affection from parents at young ages Shifts in responsibilities or social roles Personal identity- trying to find your place Having a support system in place Exposure to different behaviors

Recognizing your strengths and weaknesses can also help build self-esteem Personal Strengths: Your biggest personal strength is what is easy for you and probably not easy for everyone else. This is what you do best and where your real talents are. You should focus on using those strength to the fullest, because that’s where you have an competitive advantage and where you can create the most value for you and other people. Personal Weaknesses: Attributes that you will have a harder time doing. Everybody has weaknesses. It’s a natural thing, humans are not perfect. So don’t be embarrassed to look at your weaknesses. It will help you to improve yourself to know them.

Effects of poor self esteem Disrespect for you and others Lack of confidence Fear of change Lack of effort Irrational and distorted self statements Unhealthy relationships Low self-esteem plays a prominent role in many multifactorial theories of the etiology of eating disorders. Also said to be linked to violence towards others and oneself including suicide.

EFFECTS OF HAVING HIGH SELF ESTEEM Good Academic performance Sports participation Have better and long lasting relationships with others Better careers Better hygiene Overall better quality of life

Risk and protective factors Risk Factors: Something that INCREASES the risk of something. Protective Factors: Something that DECREASES the risk of something. Having a low self-esteem could be a risk factor for many negative things including depression, anxiety, poor physical health, problems with relationships, etc… Having a high self-esteem could be a protective factor for many positive things including good relationships, good physical health, good grades, etc… Can you think of anything that a low self-esteem could be a risk factor for?

STOP comparing Yourself to others The average American sees close to 3,000 ads a day. Almost all ads have photo shopped individuals on them. Leading the general population to have feelings of inadequacy. This has a huge effect on teens as we have so much access to social media that has been distorted to fit the perfect image.

I chose…. to live by choice, not by chance; to make changes not excuses; to be motivated, not manipulated; to be useful, not used; to excel not to compete; I chose self esteem not self pity; I chose to listen to my inner voice not the random opinions of others. I chose to be ME.
