1 Self Assessment The assessment tool on the following pages is designed to help you evaluate your individual behaviors and characteristics related to resiliency. There is no scoring for this tool – it’s purpose is to assist you in identifying your personal strengths and opportunities for growth. Read each statement and rate yourself on the accompanying scale (from “not like me at all” to “very much like me”). After you have completed your ratings on all five sections, go back and review your ratings. What are you doing well? Where is there room for growth? What patterns do you see? Identify one characteristic or behavior you would like to improve. Create an action plan for this. Identify one strength you have. Do you give yourself credit for this strength? Is it possible to use, or highlight, this strength more often?

My values are reflected in my actions at work. My values are reflected in my actions in my personal life. When my behavior, or some part of my life (e.g., work, a relationship, etc.), is out of alignment with my core values, I take action to get back in alignment. I am aware of how my work makes a positive difference. I spend time doing things that I think are meaningful. I contribute to the well-being of others. I know how to set goals and take the steps needed to achieve them. Notes:

When problem solving, I focus on areas where I can make changes instead of dwelling on things I cannot control. I acknowledge and celebrate my successes. 7 Questions for Team Assessment
Instructions: Answer the questions on the following pages about your team or department to the best of your ability. These questions reflect practices that have been linked with happier workplaces and more resilient individuals and teams. You may note some areas where it’s clear your team can make positive changes and that these changes will be fairly easy to implement. As a Resiliency Champion, this may be where you begin your efforts. Other questions will be harder to answer for the team. Some areas will highlight needed areas of change that seem more difficult. Use these questions as a starting point to facilitate conversations with you team and/or supervisor.

8  Meaning What is the mission of your team? Do team members know the mission? How do they learn about the mission and how they contribute? Do employees in your workplace feel they make a difference? Does the team ever talk about this (how they contribute, how their roles impact others, etc.)? Does your team ever set goals? How are the goals set? Does the team discuss how to achieve these goals? Has your team ever had a discussion about individual values and how those values affect how team members act (and interact) each day? Does your team do anything on a regular basis to “re-focus” on their mission or remind them how they are making a difference?

9 Self-care Do employees know what resources are available at BJC (or at your service organization) for dealing with stress/ life challenges, health issues, nutrition, exercise, and learning and development? Is it easy to eat healthy in your workplace? Are there healthy snacks available? Is it hard to avoid unhealthy food? Does your team do anything to encourage or support physical activity? Is there somewhere in your workplace you can go to “get away” for a few minutes? Does staff take appropriate breaks? If not, why? Do team members frequently work overtime or sacrifice sleep for work? Is this behavior encouraged or rewarded?

Does your team practice any type of team building or any “get to know you” activities? Do team members feel comfortable confiding in each other when they are stressed or feel overwhelmed?

12 Self-Awareness Are team members given opportunities and/or encouragement to learn skills that can increase personal growth and development (for example, taking classes or having workshops on relationship building, team communications, etc.)? Or, is there only a focus on learning or building technical or clinical skills? Does the team participate in any team building activities on a regular basis? Does the team culture support open communication and feedback? Has the team received any training on how to offer and accept feedback from others? Do team members receive any training on increasing self-awareness or emotional intelligence?

How does the team deal with changes to their workplace or work processes? Does the team take time to discuss and understand changes in healthcare and at the organization? Has your team spent time learning about and understanding the strengths of each member?

14 Optimism Does your team celebrate work successes?
Does your team celebrate work successes? Does the team celebrate personal successes and/or milestones? Does your team have a way to reward or recognize positive behavior, actions, or accomplishments? Do team members spend more time complaining about difficulties or focusing on positive aspects of their work? When challenging situations are present, do team members focus on aspects of the situation that cannot be changed? Or do they focus on how to make changes within their locus of control? Do team members discuss the positive aspects of their job or share small moments of joy within the day?
