A visual approach to artistic style in Modern Art How Artists See A visual approach to artistic style in Modern Art

Impressionism, 1870-1890 Impressionist artists such as Monet, Renoir, Degas and Seurat, began to paint on location, using quick strokes to capture the essence of the scene before them, and capturing the emotion and sense of time that a camera could not.

Vincent Van Gogh or, Post Impressionism, 1885-1905 Inspired by the impressionists, Van Gogh began to use color in a new way, incorporating his emotions Into the work.

Matisse and Fauvism, 1905-1910 Henri Matisse Andre Derain Les Fauves believed that colour should be used at its highest pitch to express the artist's feelings about a subject, rather than simply to describe what it looks like.

Marc Chagall Chagall drew from his Jewish folk culture, and created works that were influenced by the Fauves and Cubism.

Picasso Blue Period Rose Period

Picasso and Cubism, 1905 Analytic Cubism Synthetic Cubism

Cubism and Constructivism Juan Gris…synthetic cubism Lyubov Popova, constructivism

Futurism, 1909-1914 An Italian movement that emphasized the speed of modern life. It has its roots in Cubism, yet the object itself is moving rather than the artist.

German Expressionism 1905-25 Kathe Kollwitz Franz Marc An artistic style borne out of the tragedy and impact of the Wars on Germany. Artists sought to depict emotional side of the world through media use. Anselm Keifer

Georgia O’Keeffe Believed that art was the expression of the artist's personal ideas and feelings and that such subject matter was best realized through harmonious arrangements of line, color, and value.

Surrealism, 1924-1939 Rene Magritte Georgio DeChirico Sought to liberate the artist's imagination by tapping into the unconscious mind to discover a 'superior' reality - a sur-reality.

Pop Art Wayne Thiebaud Roy Lichtenstein Andy Warhol An art movement that characterized a sense of optimism during the post war consumer boom of the 1950's and 60's. It coincided with the globalization of pop music and youth culture.

The end…. What are some general statements that you can make about what shapes an Artist’s vision?
