2 Modern vs. “contemporary” Art
Modern Art is NOT the same as contemporary art. Modern Art is a period of art movements that started during the time of the industrial revolution. Contemporary art is generally accepted as art movement created from the 1970’s to current day.

3 Impressionism - “A Revolution in Art”
Originated in France. Art of the time focused on producing realistic paintings of classical subjects - in the style of the Renaissance masters. Edouard Manet - “The Father of Impressionism” First to break away from the accepted style of painting Painted modern life Painted less realistically - showed brushstrokes on purpose Claude Monet Famous for late-career waterlily paintings Used color instead of black or grey to create shadows Painted nature, gardens, and scenes of everyday life Edgar Degas Used photographs to capture ballet dancers, then painted the scenes Paul Cezanne (post-impressionist painter) Inspired famous modern artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot - female impressionist painters Vincent Van Gogh Colorful, textured paintings with thick brushstrokes and unmixed paints
