Strategic Planning- What is it? ‘The Big Picture’ of what your organisation is doing and where it is going. Helps to determine where your organisation is going over the next year or more. Why is it important? Overview and Vision- What you want to achieve and how you will do that.

Strategic Planning Models Goals Based Most common Works with the organisation’s vision and the organisational goals to achieving the mission. Issues Based Starts with examining issues that the organisation is facing. Organic Focuses primarily on the organisations vision and values.

Components of a strategic Plan Vision- Develop clear understanding of what is your preferred future. Mission- Develop a sound statement about why you exist and what you wish to achieve. Core Values and beliefs- Describes behaviours, ideas that are important to your organisation. Strategic Issues- Issues that create a gap between the ideal and reality. Operational Plans- How are you going to achieve your vision?

PESTEL Analysis- What and Why? A PESTEL Analysis is a framework or tool to analyse and monitor the external environment or factors that have an impact on an organisation. The results of which identify threats/weaknesses which can be used in a SWOT analysis. P- Political E- Economic S- Social T- Technological E- Environmental L- Legal

Where you right now? Assess the Internal and External Environments SWOT Analysis S Strengths Internal Environment W Weaknesses External Environment O Opportunities T Threats

SWOT Analysis Here/Now- List all strengths that exist now. Then list all weaknesses now. What might be? All opportunities that exist in the future. Opportunities are potential future strengths. Then list all threats that exist in future. Threats are potential future weaknesses. Plan of Action- Use your analysis to create an action plan address each of the four areas. Develop operational plans- monitor, evaluate and revise plans.

Steps in Strategic Planning Identify critical strategic issues or barriers. Develop goals and detailed action plans for each strategic issue. Maximise forces in favour and minimise forces against. Monitor Action Plan- are objectives and aims being met. SMART targets. Evaluate progress of achieving outcomes. Where are we? Where do we need to go next? Are we on target? What needs to change or be adapted? Revise the plan as necessary.
