Origins, beliefs and impact. Judaism: An Overview Origins, beliefs and impact.

Introduction Judaism developed 3,000 years ago, making it one of the world’s oldest religions. There are nearly 14 million followers of Judaism in the world today. The Judeo-Christian tradition is a major influence on our society today.

Beliefs Judaism is a monotheistic religion. They believe that people were created in (their) God’s image to act ethically (to do the right thing).

Abraham God tells a shepherd named Abraham to leave his home and go to Canaan. Abraham believes in and obeys God so God makes a covenant with Abraham that the land of Canaan would belong to his descendants.

The Ten Commandments The most important laws in Judaism. Told the Israelites how to behave toward God and other people.

Legacy of the Ten Commandments Their belief that they have a covenant with God is why these laws are important to the Jewish people today. The Ten Commandments have also been an important influence on the American system of laws.
