SHRM Student Member Benefits Presented by SHRM Student Programs Updated April 2007 It is great to be here with you today! I have been asked to spend about 30 minutes with you to discuss the Society for Human Resource Management, careers in HR, and HR education and certification. How many of you are interested in a career in Human Resources? (hands) How many of you are not interested in HR, but want to lead or manage others? Well, guess what? If you plan to manage others, you’ll be doing PLENTY of HR! For anyone dealing with issues in HR, SHRM is the leading professional association you should be aware of. This presentation will cover how you can use SHRM as a resource to help you do your job better every day.

What is SHRM?

What is SHRM? Founded in 1948 World’s largest professional association dedicated to HRM More than 210,000 individual members in over 100 countries Over 550 affiliated local professional chapters SHRM was founded in 1948 by a group of just 28 individuals who saw a need for a professional association for what was then known as personnel. SHRM is now the largest HR association serving over 200,000 members. SHRM has over 560 local chapters throughout the US and beyond.

What is SHRM? SHRM’s Student Program was created in 1965 Purpose is to promote interaction between students and practitioners Program now includes more than 430 affiliated student chapters and more than 11,000 student members SHRM’s Student Program was created in 1965 to promote interaction between students and practitioners. The student program now includes over 430 affiliated student chapters and over 11,000 student members. SHRM offers students a multitude of resources, which we will talk about in a minute.

Benefits of Student Membership

Student Membership Benefits Professional membership dues are $160 per year Student membership dues are just $35 per year HR professionals pay $160 per year to be members of SHRM. The dues have been $160 for over 10 years, so SHRM tries to keep the cost down. Students can join SHRM and will get most of the same benefits as professionals for only $35 per year. That’s a bargain, as you will see!

Student Membership Benefits Opportunity to sit for PHR certification exam Take the exam within one year of graduation Within five years of passing the exam, students must acquire two years of exempt-level HR experience Demonstrates commitment to HR Cost is $120 (cost will be much higher if you take it as a professional) http://www.hrci.org Students have the opportunity to sit for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification exam in their senior year or year after graduation. For students or recent graduates, passing the exam is the first step toward becoming fully certified. Within five years of passing the exam, students must acquire two years of exempt-level HR experience. Individuals will then be designated a certified Professional in Human Resources or PHR.
