Premiere – First Edits

Introduction We will be creating a simple video project to explore the basic Premiere editing workflow. Our tasks are: Download the sample files Make new folder on Desktop/removable media Move them to project location Create a new Premiere project Import the files Assemble the cuts on the timeline Preview/Export

Create project folder On the desktop or on your removable media, make a new folder – I’ve called mine Premiere1 In this folder, create a subfolder called video (or perhaps “source videos”) Copy the provided sample files into this folder

Start a new project Start Premiere. At the Start dialog, hit New Project

Browse for Project folder Near the top of the dialog that appears, provide a name (Premiere1) and hit browse to select the project folder you created earlier Then hit ok

Import Media Here is our Premiere workspace In the Lower Left (Project) pane, we will import our sample clips Right click in this pane, choose Import In the browse dialog, you can shift or ctrl-click to select multiple files Select them, then hit open

Find Files in Project bin Use the buttons at lower left of project bin to change the view – with previews or without

Drag a file From bin to source We want to trim a clip. Easiest way to get started is to edit directly from source window Drag a file from Bin (A) to Source pane (B) B A

Do a basic trim In the source pane, use the Scrub handle (A) to find a good starting point. Then hit the In marker (B) Then use Scrub handle to find an out point, and hit the Out marker (C) A B C

Review the timeline changes The timeline updates – notice how we have multiple channels (We see V1, A1, A2 so far) We can move video files around and perform many edits directly within the timeline with more sophisticated tools – for today, we’ll edit in source

Edit the other clips Drag to the source window Set in and out points Drag to timeline In my video files, we’re trying to change the camera angles on action to make a seamless transition between shots

Important tips! Setting in and out points does not alter the source clip, just what will be “copied” from it You can drag a clip from the Bin to the Source pane, edit, and then to Timeline, repeatedly This lets you use multiple segments from the same video file You may also double-click on a clip in the timeline to re-edit the in/out markers in the Source window Highlight a clip in the timeline and hit delete to remove it When editing from the source window, changes will cause gaps. You can shift click multiple clips in the timeline and then drag to move/rearrange/close the gaps

First export When you have the clips edited to show smooth motion, save your project Now, go to File->Export->Media The Export Settings dialog appears Important! We will discuss Presets, CODECS, and Formats in later lecture. For today, you should choose H.264 for Format, and YouTube 480p SD Wide Click on file name (near Output Name, in blue text) and a save dialog appears – choose a location (your project folder perhaps) Then hit Export Find your video! Did it work?
