1 Screen Casting Software

2 Objectives  IT Tools and Methods students will write a clear, complete and flexible outline for accomplishing basic tasks in a computer program they are proficient in.  Using Camtasia and the basic editing tools it offers, IT Tools and Methods students will create a 2-5 minute tutorial about a computer program they are proficient in.  IT Tools and Methods students will export their screen recording in the YouTube format and upload it to the appropriate YouTube channel provided by the instructor.

3 What is Screencasting?  A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration.  This is different from a screen shot Other Free Software: CamstudioCopernicus (Macs)Jing

4 Primary Affordance The main affordance of using screencasting software is to create a video tutorial, but before we talk about the software, I want to analyze what goes into a dynamic tutorial. Good Things AND Bad Things

6 Flip your index cards over…  Write down some computer programs you use and consider yourself proficient with.  It can even be what you are conducting your workshop on.

9 Let’s Begin! Find and open Camtasia Studio Survey the screen and look for any familiar items, buttons, actions.

10 Screen Introduction: Basic Layout Clip Bin Canvas Timeline

11 Screen Introduction: Canvas Video Buttons Timer Canvas Dimensions Toggle, Screen and Preview Modes Toggle Canvas- See the video during the playback

12 Screen Introduction: Clip Bin Animations and Special Effects Clip Bin- Holds your recordings, audio files, images and title slides. Library- Stores pre-populated video clips, intros, callouts and title slides. Record Button Import Media from your Computer Publish and Export

13 Screen Introduction: Timeline Layers Zoom Play Head Editing Tools Undo, Redo, Cut, Split, Copy, Paste Track Heights Timeline- Assemble and edit the video

14 TIME TO PLAY! TALK ABOUT YOUR DAY!  Make a 30 second recording where you talk about your day.  Get used to the layout and practice using the edit functions.  Tip: If you mess up, just pause, and start again the same way right before you made your mistake.

15 Screen Interface: Timeline Split- Severs the track

16 Screen Interface: Timeline Cut- Removes the part you don’t want, but first select it (it will turn blue)

17 Screen Interface: Timeline Press “CUT” and then it’s gone!

18 Screen Interface: Timeline Then Move the tracks Left to close the gap.

19 Your Mission Write a clear, complete and flexible outline for accomplishing basic tasks in a computer program they are proficient in.  States your name, objective and program  Includes all steps  Main points couple of words or a phrase  End with a summary  Double check  Should be 2-5 minutes Record when you’re ready!

20 Your Mission  Use the basic editing tools to create a 2-5 minute tutorial about the computer program you are proficient in.

21 Effects: Zoom-n-Pan Allows the learner to focus on one part of the screen. Full ScreenCanvas (Your screen) (Their screen)

22 Effects: Zoom-n-Pan Pause your playback at the point where you would like to zoom in.

23 Effects: Zoom-n-Pan Click the Zoom-n-Pan tab and resize your window to show what the canvas will look like.

24 Effects: Zoom-n-Pan Camtasia automatically adds a 1 second transition time to the Zoom-n-Pan. You can adjust this to be longer or shorter. To adjust the transition time, just click and drag either end of the arrow and move it to your specifications.

25 Effects: Callouts Visually communicates information with the ability to add text.

26 Effects: Callouts Pause your playback at the point where you would like to add a callout.

27 Effects: Callouts Click and choose a shape, border, fill color and effects. Add your text and reposition your callout.

28 Effects: Callouts To adjust the duration of the callout, just click and drag either end of the bookends and move it to your time specifications. Camtasia automatically gives 2 seconds of duration for callouts.

29 Effects: Cursor Effects Enhances the cursor for better visibility Highlight Spotlight Magnify

30 Effects: Cursor Effects Cursor Effects include: Highlighting Highlight Spotlight Magnify Left/Right Click Effects Rings Warp Ripple Click Sound Effects If not on toolbar, check under MORE

31 Effects: Cursor Effects Pause your playback at the point where you would like to add a cursor effect. Clickand Camtasia automatically adds the effect to your timeline with a 1 second transition.

32 Effects: Cursor Effects You have to assign which action and when. Here, Highlighting is used between the two effects.

33 Effects: Cursor Effects This means before and after the effects, None has to be selected.

34 Exporting your Tutorial to YouTube  This allows others benefit by accessing your content.  You can also export it by converting it into an MP4 or uploading to screencast.com.

35 Exporting your Tutorial to YouTube Click File  Click Produce and Share  Click Drop down menu  Click Share to YouTube  Click Next

37 Title, Description, Tags and Category Fill out the appropriate information about your tutorial. Privacy: Mark Public Click Finish
