WHY is Drama Club worth our time?

Why a Performing Arts Club?  Community Awareness: A theatrical production provides ample opportunities to connect with our families and neighbors. Students can engage parents, community centers and local vendors to help create sets, props, costumes and publicity.  Public Speaking: Whether performing for their peers during rehearsal or for their school and local community during a performance, students gain expertise and confidence speaking in front of a group.  Curricular Integration: A musical provides a rich and engaging springboard for students to explore many subjects in their classrooms and discover connections among various modes of learning. Our Show Kit came with show-related lesson plans for English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and more – all of which fulfill the Common Core State Standards.  Teamwork: Theatre requires extensive creative input from all its participants. Students build ensemble by working together to rehearse, construct, promote and perform their show. Every role – whether onstage or behind the scenes – is vital for the show’s success.

But Wait…there’s more! Self-Confidence: Throughout the rehearsal and performance process, young performers discover how to take creative and emotional risks and learn to trust their abilities.  Literacy: Students increase reading and writing skills at their own pace by immersing themselves in the story, reading and re-reading their scripts, memorizing their lines and taking notes at rehearsal.  Communication: During rehearsals, students learn how to articulate their thoughts and questions and carefully listen to direction in order to improve their performances.  Imagination: Theatre is most dynamic when the imaginations of its participants are fully engaged. Students make countless interpretive choices in design and performance to create a detailed, fictional world for their audiences.  Empathy: Through character work and story creation, young performers explore the lives of others. First-hand perspectives of new circumstances challenge prejudices and aid in the development of well-rounded students and citizens.  Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: The amount of work required to successfully put on a show makes all participants valuable troubleshooters. Whether inventing mnemonics to remember lines, adjusting staging to show off everyone’s faces, or mastering a tricky scene change, students have countless opportunities to creatively tackle challenges.  Self-Discipline: Through prompt attendance at rehearsals and learning lines, music and choreography on schedule, students acquire valuable self-discipline techniques and become reliable and trustworthy members of an ensemble.

Important Dates: Audition workshops/intro to drama- November 15th, 17th, 22nd , and 29th TUES and thurs morning, tues morning) Auditions december 1,6 , 8 4:05 PM-5:30 PM (call backs and extra time) Rehearsal start date – TUESDAY AND thursday MORNINGS from 8:00 AM to 9:05 AM starting december 6th Wednesday afternoons from 4:05 PM-5:30 PM Performances- may 11th and 12th 7:00 pm Daytime matinee for school may 10th 9:45 am Unfortunately, if your family are not available during these dates, we cannot give them a part in the musical this year.

singing Roles: Rafiki (1-5) Simba Nala Timon PumbaA Scar CAST: singing Roles: Rafiki (1-5) Simba Nala Timon PumbaA Scar CHORUS: The Villagers The Hyenas Prideland Animals NON-SINGING: Zazu Mufasa Sarabi Banzai, Shenzi, Ed Stage Crew: Lights Props Lead Roles= Being a lead role is a large commitment. These roles have the most lines, the most solos, and more complex choreography. Non-Singing= These parts are fantastic for students that only want a speaking role! These parts are also a big commitment, with many lines to learn. Ensemble= These parts are great for students that want a smaller part, but still want a chance in the spotlight! There are solos, and more complex choreography in several numbers throughout the musical! Chorus= These roles are perfect for students that want to be a part of the big picture of the musical, but not ready or interested in being front and center all the time! These parts are very important, and still have lots of choreography and singing. Stage Crew= For students who are interested in working backstage, and are extremely responsible, this is the job for you! We will not need stage crew members to come to rehearsals until closer to our Performance Date.

Auditions We will prepare students through workshops Must bring audition form, audition materials, and snack. Audition form will be handed out at the workshops. Looking for: singing , dancing, acting, and stage presence Cast list is a collaborative decision between all drama teachers.

Auditions All parts are important. We repeatedly explain to the students that due to the large number of children we have in the show, only a small number will be chosen for the lead roles. It’s important to model a positive attitude – regardless of the part your child gets, it will be FUN!

Behavior Expectations: We will be communicating with classroom teachers to ensure that all students are maintaining respectful, responsible, and safe behavior in and out of practice.

Attendance Policy: Rehearsals are mandatory if you are scheduled. If you have a conflict, please contact us asap Please have students arrive on time, and be picked up on time If a child is not picked up on time, is repeatedly late, or has unexcused absences, he or she may be cause for dismissal from the play Collaborate with parents for carpool
