1 K-1 Prospective Parent Night School Clubs February 17 th, 2016

2 Clubs Schuylkill students have many opportunities to participate in school sponsored and non- school sponsored extracurricular clubs and activities, many of which are free!! Schuylkill Elementary School Clubs offered to 1 st and 2 nd grade students: Reading Club Math Club Math 24 Club Lego Club World Language Club Facetime Theatre Club Bible Club Karate Aerials Gymnastics Clubs offered to students in grades 3-5: Student Government Girls on the Run Stride Reading Olympics Chess Club (5 th grade) Art Club (5 th grade) Drama Club (5 th grade) K-Kids (5 th Grade) *All clubs offered to 1 st and 2 nd grade students are also available to students in grades 3-5.

3 Reading and Math Clubs After school clubs that focus on developing reading and math skills –Students are invited to clubs by teacher recommendation –Clubs are taught by Schuylkill teachers –Clubs meet 2 times a week

4 Math 24 Club Math 24 is a competitive game that builds fluency and problem solving in all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) Club allows students to practice playing the game in order to prepare for Math 24 competitions. –Math 24 competitions occur at each grade level for any student interested in participating –1 st grade competition focuses on addition and subtraction strategies, while upper grades will use all four operations

5 Lego Club Gives students the opportunity to use their imaginations to create different types of Lego projects Builds peer relationships through cooperation, creative planning and construction of Lego projects Open to all students in grades 1-5 Club meets once a week after school –Choice of joining Monday club or Wednesday club

6 World Language Club Students are able to choose between 4 different language clubs: –Spanish -- Italian –French -- German Language is taught through conversation, music, dance and games Clubs meet after school once a week Parents have opportunity to attend end of session presentation by students at conclusion of club

7 Facetime Theatre Club After-school program at Schuylkill that runs from mid-September through mid-May. Students in this program will: –develop effective communication skills, with an emphasis on public speaking –work on musical theatre pieces from Broadway and Off- Broadway shows –participate in acting and improvisational games and activities designed to foster creativity, teamwork and willingness to take risks –learn the basics of stage movement, blocking and scene work –strengthen literacy skills (e.g., language & comprehension) –gain exposure to great writers (from Dr. Seuss to Shakespeare!) –work on vocal performance in the context of musical theatre –perform in an end-of-the-year Showcase and have lots of fun!

8 Bible Club Hosted after school by the Calvary Bible Church of Phoenixville Club leaders have been involved in children’s ministry for decades Club sessions include: –Snack -- Game and song time -- Bible lesson –Small group activities focusing on getting to know each other better Lessons are interactive and engaging Questions about the club? 9 Phoenix Karate Students are picked up by Karate van at the end of the day and transported off site to Phoenix Karate studio Students are able to complete homework, as well as build karate skills Aerials Gymnastics Students are picked up by Aerials van at the end of the day and transported off site to Aerials Gymnastics facility Aerials combines our unique gymnastics based programming and fitness for children whose parents can’t bring them in the evenings due to time constraints.

10 Student Government Comprised of 2 student representatives from each homeroom in 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th grades Members meet once a month to communicate school concerns and accomplishments to teacher advisor and/or principal Organize and lead school wide community service projects

11 Girls on the Run & Stride Sponsored by the YMCA Fun, life-changing after school programs for girls and boys in grades 3 – 8. Programs combine training for successful completion of a 5K with lessons that develop and build self-esteem and character. Program meets 2 times a week and runs March-June.

12 Reading Olympics County wide reading event offered to students in 4 th and 5 th grade Encourages students to increase the quality and quantity of books they read for enjoyment Students form teams and read 45 books in total to prepare for the event Meetings occur before and after school prior to the event to prepare Teams compete in the spring by answering questions about the books read –Teams accumulate points and earn ribbons

13 Chess Club Offers students in 5 th grade an environment to learn about the game or to improve their game Promotes application of life long skills such as focusing, planning ahead, thinking about strategies and problem solving Club is offered after school once a week

14 Art Club 5 th grade students have opportunity to join club run by art teacher Students in club create additional art projects and strengthen their artistic abilities 2 sessions are offered- one in fall and one in spring – Sessions take place in the morning before school –Interested students are put into a random drawing and 10 students are selected for each session

15 Drama Club Free club offered to 5 th grade students Meets after school Club is school sponsored and run by Schuylkill teachers –Play is presented to student body –Students are exposed to many aspects of theatre, including set creation and costuming

16 K-Kids Service club for 5 th grade students sponsored by the Kiwanis Chapter of Phoenixville. The goal is to complete projects that focus on children and benefit children in our local community. Students participate in projects in our school, our district and our community Club meets during school day and/or before school
