2K Cold Box Work Scope Provide engineered design documentation for build-to- print assembly of two cold boxes, six stages of cryogenic centrifugal cold compressor train each inclusive of interconnecting piping, controls, valves, and connection bayonets within a single vacuum enclosure. Lessons Learned Many of the aspects of the early FRIB 2K cold box design features for LCLSII The insertion of a single cold compressor stage to develop a low and high operational flow range for the cold compressor train. Recommendations The structural analysis needs to be updated for LCLS-II by FDR. RESPONSE: The structural analysis has been completed based on the LCLS-II design. They are shown in the presentation by Shirly Yang.

Recommendations (continued) Large virtual leak exists between flex ID and process piping. Need to address this. RESPONSE: Twelve- 1/8” holes are provided on the process pipe in the flow straightener section to facilitate vacuum pumping of the annular space between the flow straightener and the flexible hose

Recommendations (continued) 3. Develop function requirements document for 2K cold box. This document has been developed and is pending approval. 4. The pump down path being provided by the vendor is a different approach than Jlab, SNS, and FRIB are employing. Consider capturing this in a risk assessment and developing a back up plan in case commissioning proves difficult. The vendor proposed a pump down path. JLab will also provide a backup pump down plan based on CHL-II commissioning/operation experiences.

Recommendations (continued) 5. Consider the use of a closed loop water cooling for the turbine, cold compressors and diffusion pump. There is a closed water cooling loop for turbines, cold compressors and diffusion pumps in each cryoplant. 6. Ensure that the SLAC Electrical Equipment Inspection Program accepts the use of European electrical codes and standards. All of the electrical equipment will be inspected by SLAC electrical engineers before installation. 7. Perform a heat leak analysis on the 2K cold box to ensure that the inlet conditions to the 4.5K cold box can be met. The heat leak analysis was performed and included in “LCLSII-4.8-EN-0804 LCLS-II 2K Cold Box Process Analysis ”

Recommendations (continued) 8. Submit the seismic analysis as early as possible to ensure that the required FDR schedule can be met. The seismic analysis of 2 K cold box anchorage was completed and the reports have been submitted to SLAC for review. 9. Submit the sub-atmospheric relief valve design to the SLAC pressure system manager for approval. The relief valve design has been completed and approved by JLab pressure system committee, shown in the document “79222-A0001 2K Cold Box Relief Valves”. The report is to be submitted for SLAC pressure system review with the 2 K cold box FDR package.
