1 Cryomodule test stand at ESS site
5th SRF Collaboration Meeting Emilio Asensi, Test Stand Engineer With slides of Wolfgang Hees

2 Contents TS2 outline Layout Interfaces Organisation Controls Test Plans overview Schedule Summary

3 TS2 outline TS2 in Lund shall perform the SAT of the elliptical cavity cryomodules high-level requirements come from WP5 testing shall include: reception & preparation coupler conditioning cooldown RF tests up to full power heat load tests warm up & prepping for installation detailed testing procedures to be written by IK partners, WP10 and linac group’s SRF specialists

4 Test Stand Control room
Layout It consists of a bunker, a prep area, an area for RF equipment and a control room. Cryogenics and Test Stand Control room Cryo Transfer Line High power RF equipment Test bunker Preparation Area

5 Interfaces: Installation

6 Interfaces: Operation

7 Organisation: Installation
TS2 installation is coordinated by WP10. The other teams provide: WP11: cryoplant, transfer line (incl. valve box & warm lines) WP8 & WP17: HP RF (modulator, klystrons, waveguides, circulators, dummy loads and splitters) and LLRF equipment WP12: portable clean room (inst. & removal of beam vacuum pump), insulation vacuum pump, cryo line purging pump ICS: controls, timing system, motion control (CTS), PSS (access control, radiation & ODH monitoring) WP15: cabling, racks WP16: cooling water connections, cp air connection CF: building, utilities WP5 IKC partners (CEA & IPNO, France): advice and support AD linac group: support on SRF issues

8 Organisation: Operation
TS2 operation is organised by WP10. Other teams provide: WP11: cryoplant operation, support during CM cooldown WP8: RF engineers to operate RF equipment during tests WP12: clean room operation, connection of pumps ICS: database for test data storage IFJ PAN (In-Kind partner): specialists for CM handling, preparation, connection, testing (experience from XFEL) WP5 IKC partners (CEA & IPNO, France): advice and support AD linac group: support on SRF issues and with testing

10 Test Plans overview Testing of CMs includes a number of preparatory steps, the testing itself and a number of post-processing steps. This list of tasks is preliminary and will be expanded: Reception: Cold LP cavity tests: Inspection for damage, obvious manufacturing errors and completeness of delivery piezo capacitance measurement (before and during cooldown) Preparation for test bench: microphonics measurement Preparation for installation on test bench, including adjustments as well as mounting and dismounting of parts (door knobs, beam vacuum pumps, insulation vacuum pump) piezo scans (cavity detuning transfer function) 4π/5 and 3π/5 mode identification cavity tuner motor characterization cavity loaded Q motor characterization Installation on test bench: Lorentz force detuning compensation Moving into the bunker closed-loop nominal gradient operation Alignment of the cryo jumper connection Cold HP RF tests: Connection of flanges loaded Q measurements and adjustment Waveguide connections, cabling connections, coupler cooling connections cavity gradient calibration cavity gradient performance measurement Initial testing: Heat load measurements: Diagnostic test, showing status of insulation vacuum, leak tightness of helium circuits, integrity of electrical circuits, proper functioning of instrumentation Measuring heat loads at different operating conditions Warm up: Warm up Warm RF tests: Disconnection: Fundamental mode spectra measurements Opening cryo connections Cable calibration Disconnecting waveguides, cabling, coupler cooling, vacuum pump Warm coupler conditioning: Monitoring and pumping of the beam vacuum Extraction from the bunker Coupler conditioning, using ramped RF power Preparation for tunnel Cool down: Preparing for transport to tunnel and installation. System checking to assure it is purged and clean Cool down following a predetermined ramp Maintain cold He flow to assure operating temperature of cavities
