Meet the Teacher and homework meeting. Miss Armstrong-Squires Thank you for coming, please take a seat

Lunches, Snacks and Water We are a nut free school (due to a new starter with a severe nut allergy) so please avoid giving your child any food which contains nuts, seeds and coconut. Please can you also ensure your child has a named water bottle, that they can fill with water to drink when in the classroom.

Encouraging independence As we are now entering Year 5, it is really important to start developing your child’s independence (in preparation for their move to Secondary school in 2 years time). This can be through simple things, such as packing their own PE kits and getting them to remember their homework books. Self managing inhalers is recommended, and it is essential children have one in school (which must be named).

Homework Why? People asked for more skills based homework in the parent questionnaire. When? Starting from Monday 19th Spetember 2016. Homework books need to be brought into school on Mondays Homework books will be sent back out the same day.

What does your child need to do? Reading- ‘Strive for 5’. Handwriting- Writing 4 sentences. Mathematics 2 Mathletics tasks. Hit the Button 5 times per week.

Reading- Strive for 5 We want children to enjoy reading and sharing books with you! Children who make the most progress in reading and writing are those who read everyday. Children in Year 5 need to develop their comprehension skills. You can help your child by asking them questions about what they are reading /encouraging them to use phonics for words they are unsure of. What do you think the purpose of this book is? Why do you think the author has chosen to use this word? What effect does it have on the reader? Find 3 adjectives that the author uses to describe the character/setting? What do you think might happen next? Why?

Handwriting SATs Writing assesments place a huge emphesis on handwiriting and spelling. If handwriting is not joined up, and spelling is not correct, then children are not working at the expected level for Year 6. We are going to be using cursive handwriting. It is vital children practice at home and at school. You can help your child by: modelling cursive writing at home checking letter sizes are the same size making sure children are starting their letters on the line ensuring words are spelt correctly ensuring sentences use punctuation correctly

Mathematics- Hit the Button http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button (free online or £2.50 app for apple/android/amazon) 2 main areas Times tables- (up to 12X12) Number bonds- making 1 or 10 (using numbers with 1 decimal place) Children are expected to quickly recall their times tables (multiplication and division facts) by the start of Year 5

Homework- Mathletics http://uk.mathletics.com/signin/ Children will be given 2 Mathletics activities which relate to our topics in Maths. Children with have their indivdual login details at the back of their homework books.

Strive for 5- Reading raffle ticket Homework- Rewards If children complete all their homework, and bring their book in on time, then they will be rewarded with one afternoon playtime that week. Strive for 5- Reading raffle ticket Hit the Button- Maths raffle ticket Mathletics- Class trip to the playpark near school one breaktime.
