1 Parents’ Meeting Thursday 9th March 2017 Key Stage 2 SATs
Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

2 When are the tests? Monday 8th May Tuesday 9th May Wednesday 10th May Thursday 11th May English reading test (1 hour) English: grammar and punctuation (45mins) spelling test (20 mins approx.) Mathematics: Paper 1 arithmetic test (30mins) Paper 2 reasoning (40mins) Paper 3 reasoning Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time In 2016, Year 6 were the first to take the new SATs papers. These tests in English and maths reflected the new national curriculum and were intended to be more rigorous. There was also be a completely new marking scheme to replace the previous national curriculum levels remains the same. These tests will be both set and marked externally, and the results will be used to measure the school’s performance (for example, through reporting to Ofsted and published league tables). Your child’s marks will be used in conjunction with teacher assessment to give a broader picture of their attainment.

3 Our response to the changes…
We have changed the way the tests are reported. We will be using scaled scores to report national curriculum test outcomes. We will administer the tests in the same way as we have done previously. We will continue to use past papers for revision as well as some of the sample papers which have been made available. We will continue to assess what pupils understand and can do in a way that best suits our school. We will report the pupil’s scaled score and whether or not your child met the national standard in our annual report to Parents. Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

4 Reading The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. There will be a selection of question types, including: Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’ Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’ Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’ Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’ Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

6 How is Reading revision being organised at school?
Reading comprehension skills, text retrieval, inference etc. planned into English units Sharing of past papers, looking at the expectations of the marker – test technique! Practice reading tests Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

7 What can I do to help my child? Reading
Encourage your child to read lots of books by different authors. Talk to your child about what they have read: Why ? Can you find evidence from the task to explain ? What does that word mean? Why did the author ? What do you think ? Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

8 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling
The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and a spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes. The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions: Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’ Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’ Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

10 What can I do to help my child?
Short targeted questions on different aspects of sentences: “Where is the adverb in this sentence?” “Find all the nouns in this sentence...” A quick fire round…what is a pronoun? What does an adjective do?

11 Maths Children will sit three papers in maths:
•Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes •Papers 2 and 3: reasoning, 40 minutes per paper Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. (There is no longer a timed mental maths paper) Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including: •Multiple choice •True or false •Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart •Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

14 How is Maths revision being organised at school?
All areas of maths are being taught and will be revisited Use of past questions as teaching points, activity within lessons etc. Some practice tests in timed conditions Magical maths sessions/early skills work Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

15 What can I do to help my child?
Maths Learn / reinforce knowledge of times tables. Play games that provide opportunities to make calculations in the four rules of number. Remember - your child may solve a question in a different way than you do. As long as your child can explain their method, and achieves the correct answer, this does not matter! Play games to help learn mathematical vocabulary (e.g. “I’m thinking of a shape. It has 4 equal sides but no right angles. What is it?”) Encourage, support and check homework using CGP study book and the work books. Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

16 Mathletics! Education City!
What can I do to help my child? General Use the computer for revision games and activities. We recommend: Past papers are available to download from various websites including: Mathletics! Education City! Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

17 What help is available for my child during the tests?
All children can ask for any questions on the maths papers to be read aloud for them. Children who need more support with reading will have an adult ‘reader’ who is able to read every question aloud for them in the maths and SPAG tests. The reading paper, however, cannot be read aloud to any child. If a child’s response cannot easily be read by the marker (due to difficulties with spelling or handwriting) a scribe can re-write the response at the end of the test. 18 What will happen during SATs week?
ALL CHILDREN ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN SCHOOL EACH DAY DURING SATS WEEK. PLEASE DO NOT PUT IN ANY REQUESTS FOR LEAVE. They must be in on time! Year 6 will be encouraged to come in slightly earlier (8.30am onwards) as we must be ready to start the test at 9:00am. If there is a problem, please contact school immediately as there are procedures in place to help. Biscuits before all tests! Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

19 What can I do to help my child during SATs week?
Reassure your child - they can only do their best. Allow time to talk through any concerns or worries. Ensure that your child goes to bed early. Have a good breakfast and ensure that your child arrives at school on time with a snack and a drink. Avoid last minute cramming - this will only lead to last minute worrying. Continue going to Scouts, football, swimming club etc. Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time

20 When and how will we know the results?
The results should be sent to school by early July The results will be checked and analysed by school Test results and teacher assessments will be issued to parents with the end of year reports SAT results and teacher assessments are reported to secondary schools Core purpose T&L Not dependent on all teachers all time
