Breakfast Literally means to break your fast. Fast being the time you spend in bed asleep. How many of you had breakfast this morning? What did it involve? Success criteria I can understand simply why breakfast is important. I can understand and confidently explain two reasons why healthy breakfast is important. I can list a few healthy breakfast options. I can understand and confidently explain two reasons why healthy breakfast is important. I should also be able to give examples of what makes a healthy breakfast and why.

Gives us the mental and physical energy we need until lunch time. It can help us cut down on snacking throughout the morning. Puts you in a better mood! Research has found that those who do not skip breakfast are less likely to be over weight and have a reduced risk of heart disease or diabetes.

So what makes a healthy breakfast? Breakfast should provide about 20-25% of your daily nutritional requirement. Starchy foods such as bread and cereals. Try choose wholemeal and high fibre. Milk and dairy foods – good sources of protein and calcium. Milk with cereal, low fat yoghurt, natural yoghurt etc. Foods and drinks high in fat and sugar! They give you energy but only for a short time. They are low in other nutrients. Avoid fizzy drinks, crisps and biscuits at breakfast time. Fruit and vegetables, fresh fruit, tinned fruit, smoothies etc. Beans on toast. Meat, fish, eggs or beans. Usually seen in Mediterranean diets, scrambles egg on toast, poached egg, omelettes, baked beans etc.

Homework Design a healthy breakfast for a teenager to eat before school. You must: Sketch your breakfast in pencil and annotate in pen. Consider the target market of teenagers. Design a healthy breakfast. Explain why you have chosen this breakfast and Aim higher: Why is it healthy? Due Tuesday 2nd February.
