Maya Angelou Maya Angelou was an American poet, memoirist, and she was also a civil rights activist. She published many autobiographies, three books of essays, several different books of poetry, and she played in many movies and television shows for 50 years. She was born on April 4, 1928 and died May 28, 2014.

Maya’s early life Maya Angelou was born on April 4th 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, writer and civil rights activist. She is known for her 1969 memoir, I know why the cadged bird sings, which made literary history as the first nonfiction best seller by an African American woman. Maya Angelou attended Mission High School and she won a scholarship to study dance in San Francisco. She later dropped out of high school in her teen to become a cable car conductor, she later returned to high school and became pregnant her senior year and graduated.

Maya’s invention “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” The works of Maya Angelou was phenomenal her autobiography, plays, and television got her places. She also had an active thing in directing and known for her books. In 1933 at Bill Clintons inauguration Maya recited her poem “On The Pulse of Morning” 1928-2014 she was honored by universities, literally organizations, and government agencies. She has over fifty-four honor rewards, and twenty-one honorary degrees. One of her most important award was “Presidential Medal of Freedom” this award was given to her by Barack Obama. It was distinguishing as the highest civilian honor in the United States. She received it in 2010.
