2 2000-2010 Time period: 2000-2010 Who: Famous Black Poet, First Black Secretary of State, Opera’s Orphan House, and First Black President of the United States What: Everyone chose people who made a difference in the world for African Americans.

3 About Maya Angelou Born on April 4, 1928 She is a famous poet, Civil Rights speaker, an autobiographer, playwright, director, producer, performance artist, and educator Believes poetry is the strength for spirit. She is the first black woman to recite her poetry at a U.S. presidential inauguration

4 Nominations and Awards Won A nomination for National Book Award, a Yale University fellowship, a Pulitzer Prize nomination, Honorary degrees from Smith College, and a Tony Award nomination for best supporting actress. She was also named Woman of the Year in Communications by Ladies Home Journal, and was named one of the top hundred most important women She won the Black Film Award in 1998, Audience Choice Award 1998, and Crystal Award

6 Colin Powell Colin Powell was born on April 5 th 1937, in Harlem New York City. He served for the U.S. Army and received a purple heart badge after being wounded by a punji- stick booby trap. Overall Colin Powell received 11 military decorations, including the Legion of Merit.

7 Colin Powell In 2001 Colin Powell was appointed to Secretary of State by George W. Bush in 2001. Colin Powell was the first Black man to be Secretary of State and he broke the barrier for African Americans all over the world.

9 OPRHA WHINFREY Changed the life's of many impoverished African girls. Made a promise in 2001 that she would one day make a school for impoverished girls. The school opened in 2007. Oprah is one of the wealthiest African American in the United States, She grew up poor and neglected as a child. She has helped many people and doesn't let her past slow her down.

10 Oprah Winfrey Oprah changed history by giving these impoverished South African girls a chance to attain a education and change the life's of the girls.

12 BARACK OBAMA Barack Obama was the first black president of the United States. Barack Obama has been president since January 20 th 2009, the day he was inaugurated. He had to retake his oath of office on January 21 st because Chief Justice John Roberts messed it up on the 20 th during the real inauguration. This event impacted history because Barack Obama was the very first black president in the United States.

13 BARACK OBAMA He received a Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia University in 1983, and a Law Degree from Harvard University in 1991.
