Presentation transcript:

Where parents of tweens and teens learn, share & connect. Parenthetical Where parents of tweens and teens learn, share & connect. Ask everyone to introduce themselves briefly. We’re going to be moving back and forth between the PowerPoint and the website. Your screen will change but we’ll do it for you. When it is on the website, you’ll be able to click on the website and move around the site. It’s live.

What is Parenthetical? Website, blog, social network Prototype for sharing any parenting information in an interactive online format The site has research based information, space for participants to comment and interact, and is updated several times a week. This version of the site, as you know, is for parents of 10-16 year olds. However, we’ve built the site so the structure remains static but the content and focus can change. For instance, we could easily envision a version of the site that is for new parents or parents of children with ADHD.

Site reflects key components of . . . Web 2.0 Adult Learning Parent Education & Support Programs Web 2.0: Co-creation of knowledge, visual, accessible at any time, interactive (site and posts) Adult Learning: opportunity to pursue deeper learning and self-direct learning Parent Education: informal vs. non-formal, facilitation, practice (meta-parenting – reflecting on parenting), transitional period/age targeted, dosage issues/intensity (low intensity with long duration)

www.myparenthetical.com Here’s a screenshot of the front page of the website. Anyone can access this at any time. However, in order to utilize the collaborative or user features, participants must register as members on the site (also free).

Content Provided by the Site Facilitators Content that site facilitators provide: Topic of the Week, Tip of the Week, resources

Content Contributed by Site Users Content participants contribute: Comments in Topic of the Week and Questions for Wise Talk and responses to WiseTalk questions

Content Provided Collaboratively by Users & Facilitators Collaborative Content: Articles related to parenting and child development found elsewhere and shared through “In the News” and Videos or cartoons related to these same topics shared through “In Sight”

Site Objectives Provide unbiased research-based information about parenting and child development Increase parents’ social support Decrease parents’ stress Affirm appropriate developmental expectations Research shows that reduced stress, increased sense of parenting competence, positive attribution, and an increased sense of parental social support is linked to more competent parenting, which in turn is linked to positive child outcomes and reduced risk of negative child outcomes. Feeling better about themselves makes adults parent better.

Evaluation Voluntary surveys of participants Web Analytics Parenthetical is being evaluated through voluntary surveys of site participants. Site use is also evaluated through anonymous web analytics that track the number of users on the site and which features on the site they use.
