CREATING A CULTURE OF Growth Mindset The Office of Equity & Accelerated Student Achievement Anne Arundel County Public Schools May 25, 2016

Our OUTCOMES: Learn what a Growth Mindset is and why it’s important Explore tools & strategies to support your students in developing the mindset they need to succeed.

YOU CAN LEARN ANYTHING! https://www.khanacademy.org/youcanlearnanything

WHAT’S THIS GROWTH MINDSET THING? Discuss! Capture your thoughts! Choose a person to share! Dump sheet – DONE!!! What do you know? What do you want to learn?

WHY GROWTH MINDSET? EMBRACING growth mindset LEADS TO SUCCESS! 25 years of Growth Mindset research show that we can learn more and become smarter if we work hard and persevere. Growth Mindset tools can be taught and lead us to learn more, learn it more quickly, and view challenges and failures as opportunities to improve learning and skills. - -Carol Dweck

Growth mindset three Core Beliefs Students perform better in schools when teachers believe that intelligence is not fixed, but it can be developed. Teaching students that intelligence can be grown is especially powerful for students who belong to typically stereotyped groups. Growth mind-sets focus on effort and motivate students to overcome challenges.

At table: Now that you are developing a stronger understanding, create a working definition of what Growth Mindset is and can do for your students. (Put on back of dump sheet?)

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GROWTH MINDSET? Flip over the cards on your table! Discuss… GROWTH OR FIXED? Create two groups: GROWTH & FIXED Each table gets a few cards and then call on one or two tables

How did we do?? Verify

SOUNDS GOOD, BUT HOW DO WE DO IT? USE GROWTH MINDSET TOOLS! There are MANY tools… But AACPS has chosen five! Let’s check them out! Sounds like a nice philosophy, but how do you develop it??

PROCESS PRAISE & GROWTH LANGUAGE Use words that focus on effort & growth Focus on Growth!

The power of yet! A very cool word! YET

Goal setting & reflection Lead students to own their learning with goal setting and reflection!

Growth & effort rubrics EFFORT COUNTS!

Growth mindset readings Stories can help light the way!

Growth Mindset tools DESIGN CHALLENGE! Divide up the materials in the folder. Read and discuss them Design an “outfit” (words & images) for your “STUDENT” that shows how these tools will support his/her success Divide up your team for the runway show: Half to describe the “outfit” and half to walk him/her down the runway As a table - person paper & markers

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?? Success is . . . One scenario at each table - First Review the scenario on your table Decide which person needs to shift their mindset Next Choose tools you could use to support their change Rewrite the scenario and embed your strategies Finally Post your revised scenario Participate in the Gallery Walk to give feedback and get great ideas WHAT WOULD YOU DO?? Success is . . . One scenario at each table -

YOUR NEXT STEPS!! Create a “Next Steps” on your organizer like the one on the slide to capture what you will take back to school and how you will inspire your students & others to embrace Growth Mindset.

How can you… HELP STUDENTS BELIEVE . . . THEY CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING! Floating soccer field
