2 Take the Mindset Survey

3 Have you ever said I’m not good at ____________?

4 What do you do when you feel you aren’t good at something or you fail?

5 The power of “yet” vs. the tyranny of “now”

6 What is Mindset? Based upon Carol Dweck’s (2006) research on achievement and success Beliefs about yourself and your most basic qualities Can have a Fixed or a Growth Mindset – or a variation Explains: Why brains and talent alone don’t bring success How they can stand in the way of it Why praising brains and talent doesn’t foster self-esteem and accomplishment, but jeopardizes them How teaching a simple idea about the brain raises grades and productivity It is not a promise of a specific result – the focus is on engagement in the learning and growth process

7 Listen for the differences between growth and fixed mindset
Carol Dweck on Mindset Listen for the differences between growth and fixed mindset

8 Group Activity Characteristics of Fixed Mindset
Characteristics of Growth Mindset How to use Growth Mindset with ourselves with students Mindset

9 Fixed Mindset (Dweck, 2010) The belief that basic qualities, like intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits Time is spent documenting intelligence or talent instead of developing them The belief that talent alone creates success—without effort

10 What is wrong with a Fixed Mindset?
People who feel they aren’t smart or talented believe it is who they are & it will never change. People who believe they are smart and talented are scared to risk or take chances – it may be disproved!

11 Growth Mindset The belief that basic abilities can be developed through dedication, hard work, and strategy—brains and talent are just the starting point Creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment

12 Your Brain on Mistakes Growth Mindset brains:
Pay more conscious attention to mistakes Pay more attention to feedback Improve subsequence performance – in other words – LEARN! *Moser, Schroder, Heeter, Moran, & Lee (2011)
