INTRODUCTION STIs are ranked among the five most important causes of adults seeking health care and of healthy productive life lost The morbidity from STIs (excluding HIV) in women aged 15-45 years ranks second only to maternal causes

PREVENTIVE MEASURES OF STIs Health Education Notification and treatment of sexual partners Counsel patient on risk reduction Provide condoms

Common STIs Chlamydia Gonorrhea Trichomoniasis Syphillis Genital warts Genital herpes Hepatitis B HIV/AIDS

CHLAMYDIA The most common bacterial STI Greatest number of infections found in people 15 to 24 years old Untreated it can affect the cervix, urethra and occassionally the rectum, throat, eye 50% have NO symptoms ( men and women)

Management of chlamydia Azithromycin and doxcycline are first line drugs (CDC) Cefixime 400mg single dose, plus doxycycline 100mg every 12hours for 7 days

Trichomoniasis Caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. One of the commonest STI world wide with the highest prevalence in Africa (11%-25% in study populations). About 170 million people affected annually according to WHO Patients are often asymptomatic but may experience frothy yellow-green vaginal discharge(women)/ non- gonococcal urethritis(men)

Management of Trichomoniasis Oral metronidazole 2g as single dose or 500mg twice daily for 7days Secnidazole 2g single dose Tinidazole 2g single dose

GONORRHEA The 2nd most common bacterial STI Most common in people aged 15-29 Commonest symptom include increased vaginal discharge(females), thick yellowish-green discharge from penis, lower abdominal pain and dysuria

Management of Gonorrhea First line dual drug regimen therapy Ceftriaxone 250mg IM single dose plus Azithromycin 1g PO Single dose If ceftriaxone is unavailable, give oral cefixime 400mg plus a single dose of azithromycin 1g PO

EPICEPHIN(Ceftriaxone 1gm,0.5gm, 2gm )

Composition Each scored tablet contains Secnidazole 500 mg

Tablets Powder for oral suspension: Stripes of 3&5 tablets in packs of one strip. Powder for oral suspension: Bottles each contains 15 ml or 25ml 200 mg /5ml. after reconstitution by adding the sterile water content .
