Parts of Speech Summary

There are 8 parts of speech: nouns pronouns adjectives verbs adverbs prepositions conjunctions interjections Except for interjections, the parts of speech work together, & you usually have to see how a word is working with other words to be sure what part of speech it is.

I’m tired, so I’ll rest. -- conjunction I am so tired. -- adverb Remember that a word can be one part of speech in a certain context & another part of speech in a different context: I run every day. -- verb I went for a run. -- noun I’m tired, so I’ll rest. -- conjunction I am so tired. -- adverb She’s a good student. -- adjective They did it for the good of the team. --noun

Noun: person, place, thing, idea Pronoun: takes the place of a noun Adjective: describes a noun or pronoun Verb: shows an action or a state of being Adverb: describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb Preposition: shows the relationship between a noun & another word in the sentence Conjunction: links two items Interjection: a word/phrase to show emotion, set apart from the sentence, grammatically unrelated to the rest of the sentence.
