Welcome to Priory Duke of Edinburgh Expedition evening

Priory DofE Firstly just a reminder about the initial 3 sections that should be getting started by this point Physical Volunteering Skill Any help you need please come and speak to any of us as there are plenty of ideas that qualify.

The Expeditions You should have had a letter that was sent via pupils that stated what date your child was doing their practice expedition and their qualifying expedition. Dates are as follows for year 10 Practice expedition 1 - 30th – 1th September/October 2017 Practice expedition 2 – 7th – 8th October 2017 Qualifying expedition 1 – 12th – 13th May 2018 Qualifying expedition 2 - 19th – 20th May 2018 At this point you should already know which weekend you are on!

The Expeditions Dates are as follows for year 9 Practice expedition 1 - 21st – 22nd April 2018 Practice expedition 2 – 28th – 29th April 2018 Qualifying expedition 1 – 16th – 17th June 2018 Qualifying expedition 2 - 23rd – 24th June 2018 We have not split you into walking groups yet so you won’t know which weekend you are on yet. We will do this ASAP.

Practice Expeditions This is going to putting the map skills that they learnt in training sessions into practice. Day 1 on the practice expedition, groups will be walking with a leader at all times however the leader is only going to be there for safety. Navigation will be the sole responsibility of the pupils.

Practice Expeditions Day 2 leaders will be walking with their groups for some of the route and then the groups will be on their own and meet their leader further along the route. About half of the route on the 2nd day will be unassisted navigation.

Practice Expedition Itinerary Time (Approx) Action 7:30 Meet at the car park at the rear of Priory School where minibuses are parked. Start loading kit on to minibuses 8:00 Depart for Easton (expedition start point) with kit, pupils and minibuses 9:00 Arrive at Easton, unpack kit, final briefing, set off groups at 10 minute intervals. 12:30 – 13:00 Lunch Stop 16:00 First group reaches Cheriton Campsite 16:00 – 17:30 Groups arrive at Cheriton Campsite and start setting up their tents. Group leaders may facilitate activities and wide games here. Groups may choose to have their own entertainment 17:30 Groups cook their dinner 21:00 Groups head to bed 22:00 Lights out 7:00 Wake up for Day 2 Cook and eat breakfast for the second day Pack up and set off Groups reach car park where minibuses are parked (Bishop’s Waltham palace) 16:30 Set off back to Priory 17:00 Arrive at Priory and unpack kit. Return borrowed kit

Mobile Phones It is worth noting that times can change as a result of unforeseeable circumstances such as poor traffic. In this case we will advise pupils to contact you if and when. Pupil’s personal mobile phones will be allowed however they should not be used. We will supply a fully charged phone for use in emergencies.

Kit pick up date. Thursday 28th September The date to pick up kit is going to be the 28th of September. This will happen straight after school on the astro. On this day straight after school you will be able to pick up the kit you need to borrow.

Kit return date Tuesday 10th October Please could all kit be returned by the 10th of October Please drop off kit at room D19 where it will be signed off. Any damages to kit will need to be paid for Any kit that you wish to donate, we will be happy to take off your hands.

Meals For the practice and qualifying you are going to be cooking and preparing your own food for your group. It is essential that you let your group know about any allergies you may have (you should have done this in the first aid session) It is recommended that as a group sometime before the expedition that you go out and buy the food as a group yourself It is also worth buying high sugar snack foods for instant energy whilst on the expedition.

Emergency Procedures We have your medical form that you filled out and the medical history of pupils, if this has changed please make me aware at the end. At the end of the presentation, any medication details that require more information other than what the school already have please make me aware Medication will NOT be carried by members of staff. Epi-pens and inhalers will be carried by the pupils All staff and volunteers are first aid trained. If you have a personal first aid kit it might be worth bringing it just in case

Qualifying The main difference between practice and qualifying is that the pupils will only be given the checkpoints, they will planning the route from scratch. This will happen at the Route planning session for year 10 (22/3/18) and map skills and route planning session for year 9 (25/1/18)

Expedition End Since the expedition is ending at Porchester Castle, parents/guardians are more than welcome to pick up their children from the end point of the expedition.

After the Expedition Pupils will need to log into their Edofe account and update the information on their expedition. We are currently looking into a DofE celebration evening which you will be invited to (date and venue tbc)
