“Pathway to Success” Meadow View Elementary 5th Grade Elementary AVID! “Pathway to Success” Meadow View Elementary 5th Grade

What is AVID? AVID is an acronym for: Advancement Via Individual Determination It is a program that has been used in middle and high schools across the nation, since 1980. It is a class that students can take, beginning in the 6th grade. However, the AVID strategies have begun to trickle down to the elementary schools and is being implemented here, at MVES, for our 4th and 5th graders!

What does AVID mean for my 5th grader? High Expectations! -organized -focused -rigorous curriculum -independent worker/thinker -critical thinking -self-disciplined

Usage of a Planner! -goal-setting -planning ahead -prioritizing -being responsible for assignments; not dependent on parent/teacher

Note-Taking Skills in an Organizational Tool! (Binder) -organizing information -tracking grades -communicating with parents -using neat handwriting -learning how to study -using notes as a resource/reference

Levels of Thinking/Questioning! -helps students understand different types of questions -helps students with End of Grade Testing

How can I support my student with AVID? -SIGN PLANNERS NIGHTLY! -Review homework assignments, upon completion. -Provide a good study area. -Talk with your child about upcoming projects and/or tests. -Help your student study from their notes. -Ask them to rewrite their notes and/or assignments, if they are illegible! -Read all letters and communication from the teacher and the school.

Parent Support—We need your help!! In order for your child to reach their fullest potential, your child needs: 10 hours of sleep each night! limited amounts of TV and video games, especially right before bed a healthy diet limited absences, tardies, and check outs exercise a work area that allows them to do their work independently and free of distractions Adequate supplies!

Activities New to Your 5th Grader! Safety Patrol Academic Derby Civic Oration Speech Contest Current Events/Scholastic News Magazine AVID strategies Orchestra/Honors Chorus “Battle of the Books” D.A.R.E.-Drug Awareness Program Library Assistants Science EOG “Recycling Rangers”

We need your involvement in PEP’s! (Personalized Education Plans) This does not apply to all 5th graders. So, who needs a P.E.P? Students who: scored below a Level 3 on an end-of-grade test or writing test are repeating a grade are at-risk due to behavior are at-risk due to excessive absences are at-risk of failing local promotion standards, due to classroom performance

What is the PEP? a plan for focused intervention that is tailored to address a specific student's individual needs it is a working document that is monitored, reviewed, and updated every 9 weeks the purpose is to use the student's strengths to improve the weaker areas parents should have responsibilities for activities at home to help the student improve it is developed as soon as it is recognized the student is falling behind goals and interventions change as needed

Please visit our school’s website regularly! Parent Conferences! ! 5TH grade teachers would love to meet with you to discuss your child’s progress! Please set up at least 2 personal conferences with your child’s teacher! Phone conferences are available from 8-8:30 am or after 4:15 pm. Please visit our school’s website regularly! http://meadowview.nc.oce.schoolinsites.com/
