What Influences Your Values? Human Sexuality Book Chapter 2 Relationships and Choosing Abstinence Lesson One: Page 16 Values: beliefs and standards of conduct that are important to a person. What Influences Your Values? Cultural Heritage Religious Beliefs Family Traditions

Peer Pressure: the influence that people your own age may have on you Peer Pressure: the influence that people your own age may have on you. Peer Pressure can be positive or negative. Adolescents with low self esteem can be particularly influenced by peer pressure Dating…. Considered an important social activity Group dating offers teens opportunities to interact with a variety of people while getting to know someone better May lead to steady dating, which can interfere with developing other healthy relationships

Communication Communication: process through which you send messages and to receive messages from others. Good communication skills will help you keep relationships healthy and form more mature relationships.

Good Communication Skills Use “I” messages to avoid placing blame. Maintain a polite tone in your voice. Speak directly to the person. Provide a clear, organized message that states the situation. Body language should match your words.

Good Listening Skills Give your full attention to the person talking. Focus on the speakers message. Indicate your interest. Remember what the speaker has said. Use positive body language.

Communicating isn’t as simple as it seems Communicating isn’t as simple as it seems. Messages can become confusing at any of the following points in an exchange… What you intend to say What you actually say What the other person hears What the other person intends to say back What the other person actually says back to you What you hear

When conflicts or disagreements occur rely on the TALK strategy Conflict: a disagreement, struggle, or fight. When conflicts or disagreements occur rely on the TALK strategy T-take time out A-Allow each person to express his or her opinion uninterrupted L-let each person take turns asking questions and clarifying any statements K-keep brainstorming (talking) to find a good solution

Conflict and Dating In any relationship, people must communicate in order to have their feelings known and understood. Conflict can occur when two people’s expectations are different and are not clearly communicated. Effective communication will help you maintain healthy mature relationships

Lesson 2: Decisions About Sexual Relationships It is important to recognize that being physically attracted to someone and being in love are not the same thing. Infatuation, or exaggerated feelings of passion for another person, can sometimes be mistaken for love. Abstinence: a deliberate decision to avoid harmful behaviors, including sexual activity and the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Influences can be positive or negative!! Peers Magazines Books Music Television Movies Influences can be positive or negative!!

Benefits of Abstinence Lesson 2 continues… Intimacy: a closeness between two people that develops over time. Benefits of Abstinence Abstinence eliminates both persons’ risk of contracting an STD, including HIV/AIDS Abstinence is the only 100% effective method to avoid unplanned pregnancy Abstinence ensures that you will not go against your personal values Abstinence can allow a couple to build a deeper relationship

Practicing Your Decision to be Abstinent Make a detailed list of your reasons for choosing abstinence Discuss your feelings, your decision, and your expectations of the relationship with your boyfriend or girlfriend Place your self in situations that reinforce your decision to be abstinent. When dating choose places to go that will encourage conversation, or date in groups Plan your time together-where you will go, how long you will stay and what time you will go home
