HIMSS Standards Activities International Standards Organization Welcome and Introduction Have been with HIMSS for 2 years; previously served as Vice President, American Hospital Association and Executive Director of the Emergency Nurses Association HIMSS has a staff of nearly 60 individuals focused on developing and delivering educational, publishing, professional and member resources to the 13,000 HIMSS individual members, 80 corporate members and thousands of other interested healthcare IT professionals.

HIMSS Strategic Direction Vision Advancing the best use of information and management systems for the betterment of human health.   Mission To be the trusted source for knowledge, advocacy, leadership, collaboration and community affiliation. IT has become recognized as significant contributor to the delivery of health care HIMSS vision is that healthcare has and utilizes the best in systems (information and management) for the best possible care HIMSS mission: move from that state where HIMSS is the “Gathering Place” to where HIMSS is the source of knowledge, expertise, leadership

Goal : Industry Affairs The expertise and knowledge of healthcare information professionals frame and lead healthcare legislation, regulations, policies, standards, and practices

Focus on Industry Affairs Industry Issues White papers and analyses (bar-coding, patient safety, CPOE, system integration, clinical informatics) Public Policy Influencing direction of regulation & legislation Standards Educating members, promoting initiatives Industry affairs is second among HIMSS’ priorities Objective of this area has two focal points: expanding individual knowledge and expanding HIMSS influence Industry Issues: serving as source of analysis on key industry topics Government Affairs: seeking to ensure that HIMSS and its members (individuals and companies) are a part of the policy debate on matters affecting this industry Are currently working with governmental agencies on regulatory issues; could evolve into efforts to influence legislative issues

HIMSS Standards Activities Dateline Feb 19, 2003: HIMSS appointed as new Secretariat for ISO TC 215 and administrator for the U.S. TAG!

What is ISO? International Organization for Standardization Oversight body for development of global standards for business, government and society 13,700 Standards 147 National Standards Institutes representing member countries 224 Technical Committees Currently there are more than 13,700 International standards. ISO is a network for National standards institutes from 145 countries.

ISO Mission To work with government authorities, representatives of industry, research institutes, universities and consumers, and other experts, to reach a consensus on worldwide standards in almost all realms of human endeavour, from aircraft and space vehicles to basic units of measurement and test methods.

Value – Partnership - Optimization ISO Goal The Key Concepts underlying ISO’s operational model and business stance are: Value – Partnership - Optimization

ISO Goal Understand, serve and possibly anticipate market needs (value); Ensure the maximum participation and collaboration of all the relevant parties during the various stages of work within the ISO system (partnership)

ISO Goal Improve continuously the core business processes of the organization (optimization), by securing and effectively using the resources required to meet the standardization needs of the 21st century, while making substantial use of information and communication technologies.

What is TC 215? Technical Committee 215 Develops healthcare informatics standards 24 member countries each with one vote American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is our member body ANSI appoints the Secretariat for TC 215 and accredits TAG procedures HIMSS is the Secretariat for TC 215

What is the U.S. TAG? U.S. Technical Advisory Group Each member country represented on the Technical Committee organizes a TAG The U.S. TAG develops U.S. positions and identifies the need for new work HIMSS is the U.S. TAG administrator

Why is HIMSS interested in the ISO Secretariat/U.S. TAG? Through HIMSS, the expertise and knowledge of healthcare information professionals frame and lead healthcare legislation, regulations, policies, standards, and practices
