Year 10 Subject Selection – Information Technology We offer the choice of 2 units – each with a slightly different emphasis

Option 1 - Applications The Applications strand is designed to give students a range of skills to assist them being independent and creative users of technology, whether for study, employment or recreation.  While most students have been introduced to software on a low level, this course gives students experience in developing and applying higher level skills to interpret and manage data.  Students will develop their skills in the use of: MS Excel, using a range of formulas, including lookup and conditional (if) formulas to manipulate data to solve a range of real-world problems. Extremely useful for supporting studies in maths and Science. Graphics manipulation utilising Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Fireworks Web site design using an online package Audio editing with Audacity An introduction to Programming using Scratch MS Access is used to develop skills in relational databases, covering importing data, create fields and tables, developing queries to select and update data – the basis of most software applications.  The course also covers digital security issues, making appropriate choices when considering purchasing technologies to solve problems and uses of social networking. The course provides a strong foundation for progression on to VCE Computing.

Option 2 – Programming/Web development Programming/Web development is designed to have more aof a programming bias than Option 1. It includes: 1. An introduction to coding/programming through the use of HTML (Hypertext Mark Up Language) which is used to deliver web pages to your computer.  In addition to HTML, students will gain knowledge and experience of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), image formats and image manipulation. 2. An understanding of the use of websites from a business and social perspective: identifying why websites are used in business looking at current design trends discussing online sales and future of retailing online safety for consumers use of social networking 3. Programming using Scratch, an excellent program which can be used for digital animations and game design. The course provides a strong foundation for progression on to VCE Computing.

Assessment Students will be assessed on each component of the course. This may take the form of practical tasks (and written work.   Students will create and maintain an online ePortfolio in SiMON, which stores their semester’s work electronically. All tasks and results are available for students and parents to view online. As with all Year 10 units, an examination will be held at the of term, where students will complete written tasks related to the course work. The final grading will be a combination of practical tasks and written work completed during the course, plus the examination mark.

Subject pathway…. These units form a strong basis for VCE Computing - a pathway to further studies in areas such as: computer science information systems Business systems engineering Robotics Linguistics Logistics database management software development and to careers in digital-technologies based areas such as information architecture, web design, business analysis and project management. Advanced computing skills form a solid foundation for a wide range of careers and/or study – including other VCE units at Nagle College.

More information…. We understand that VCE/IT jargon can sometimes be difficult to interpret. For more information about the course and its opportunities, please contact: Paul Mlynarz ICT Co-ordinator pmlynarz@nagle.vic.edu.au
