1 Year 12 Subject Selection – VCE Further Mathematics Units 3 & 4

2 Course Description VCE Further Mathematics (Units 3 and 4) consists of two areas of study: a compulsory Core section to be completed in Unit 3 and an Applications section to be completed in Unit 4. The Core comprises two Areas of Study: Data Analysis (40% of the year’s coursework) and Recursion and Financial Modelling (20% of the coursework) . The Applications comprises two modules to be completed, from a selection of four possible modules. Nagle College students will study: Module 1: Matrices (20% of the coursework) and Module 2: Networks and Decision Mathematics (20% of the coursework) .

3 Why study this subject? Further Mathematics Units 3 and 4 is a final year VCE sequence for students who are interested in developing their ability to apply mathematical techniques in day-to-day situations. VCE Further Mathematics Units 3 and 4 will give students a basic understanding of the use of mathematical terminology and techniques in some common real world settings. This subject will also allow students to develop methodical approaches to problem solving and to become competent in the use a CAS graphics calculator. (Please note: While some tertiary courses require no more than Further Maths, students who are intending to pursue university studies in maths-heavy courses such as Engineering, Architecture or the Sciences, may require VCE Mathematical Methods, or even Specialist Mathematics). Please check with Mrs Lightfoot.
