1861 THE SOUTH SECEDES – January 1861 Abraham Lincoln is the president of the untied stated of America. -Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina and south Carolina. These states became the “confederate states of America” They create a confederate government in February 1861. Jefferson Davis was named president of the confederacy -----

1861 THE SOUTH SEIZES FEDERAL FORTS – February 1861 President Buchan refused to surrender southern federal forts to the seceding states State troops sized them south Carolina refused a supply ship at fort Sumter, the ship was trying to supply the federal government ATTACK ON FORT SUMTER – April Lincoln told the southern states, south Carolina Sensed a trick, forced surrender on rob Andersen, shots were fired on at the fort, civil war began April 12th

THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG July 1863 Fought from July 1st to July 3rd Was another one of the bloodiest battles in the civil war In the three days between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers were killed The union army was victorious
