What Is An Amendment? A change to the constitution.

Who Wanted The Bill Of Rights? Anti-Federalists

Why Did The Anti-federalists Want The Bill Of Rights? They had previously been under the rule of a King who denied them of their rights. They wanted their rights to be specifically listed so that the government could not deny them any of those rights.

1st Amendment Guarantees freedom of religion, of speech, and of the press; the right to assemble peacefully; and the right to petition the government.

2nd Amendment “Right to bare arms.” Protects the right to possess firearms.

3rd Amendment Declares that the government may not require people to house soldiers during peacetime.

4th Amendment Protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures.

5th Amendment Guarantees that no one may be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. Protects against double jeopardy. Miranda Rights. Eminent Domain.

6th Amendment Guarantees the right to a trial by jury in criminal cases.

7th Amendment Guarantees the right to a trial by jury in civil cases.

8th Amendment Prohibits excessive bail, fines, and punishments.

9th Amendment “Unenumerated Rights.” Declares that rights not mentioned in the Constitution belong to the people.

10th Amendment Declares that powers not given to the national government belong to the states or to the people.

Assignment With a partner of your choice, look through a newspaper and find an article or picture related to one of the first 10 amendments. Cut the article or picture out and glue it to a piece of construction paper. Title the paper by the amendment number. Give a brief description and explanation.
