Communicable( Infectious ) Or Non- Communicable (Infectious )…… Diseases Communicable( Infectious ) Or Non- Communicable (Infectious )……

How infectious diseases are spread… Every infectious disease is caused by one of several types of microrganisms known as pathogens. Pathogens How infectious diseases are spread… Transmission can occur through direct contact with an infected person, or animal, or a contaminated object. THE 6 PATHOGENS

1.BACTERIA ORGANISMS THAT RANK AMONG THE MOST WIDESPREAD OF LIVING THINGS. For BACTERIA to live is must have a food supply, suitable temperature, moisture and darkness. BACTERIAL diseases include: Pneumonia, salmonella, Strep Throat, Syphilis

Strep Throat

2. VIRUSES Life like forms that are one of the bodies worst enemies. VIRUSES are all parasites so they require living cells for survival Viruses attach specific types of cells. Examples: Rabies-Brain Cells, Polio- Nervous System, Common Cold/Flu-Respiratory System, Small Pox Chicken Pox, Shingles and Warts- Skin Tissue

Shingles

3. Parasites (Rickettsias) Classified somewhere between a virus and bacteria Most grow in the intestinal tracts of insects, which then carry them to their human hosts. Bloodsucking insects such as lice, mites, and ticks

Lice

4.Fungi Organisms that cannot make their own food. Many feed off dead animals, insects and leaves. Prefer dark, damp environment Invade mainly deep tissues of hair, nails and skin Examples- Ringworm, Athletes Foot

Athletes Foot

5. Protozoans Most are harmless Disease producing protozoans are most common in tropical areas that have poor sanitation. Examples- Malaria, Sleeping Sickness

6.WORMS Invade the blood, intestines, liver or lungs. Tapeworms live in the intestines. Roundworms infect the intestines, muscles and fluids under the skin

IMMUNITIES Active Immunity- is the type of immunity that your body develops Passive Immunity- is the immunity passed from a mother to her child. Lymphocytes-a type of white blood cell that travels through the blood stream T- CELLS- kill pathogens- not all

Guideline to reduce the spread of infection: Bathe or shower everyday to keep your skin, hair and nails clean Avoid sharing eating or drinking utensils Store and prepare food in a safe way to prevent food poisoning Wash your hands after using the bathroom, after changing diapers, and before or serving food If you are well, avoid contact with people who are sick
