Taxonomy Test Review

What is the Science of classifying living things? Taxonomy

Who was the first to classify living things? Aristotle

What was Aristotle's method of classification? He grouped according to where they lived- land, air, water

What were problems with Aristotle’s method? Some animals like the duck could live in all three places. Where is it categorized?

Whose system do we base our classification system on? Linnaeus

What is the two part naming system Linnaeus came up with? Binomial nomenclature

What language was chosen for the scientific names? Latin

Why was Latin chosen as the language? It is a dead language and therefore wont change. It is easier for people around the world to communicate and understand each other. The Universal Language!

Which of the following is a common name? Cyanocitta cristata Northern Atlantic moon snail Felis leo Canis vulpes

What is the correct way to write the genus and species of an organism? 1. genus species 2. Genus Species 3. Genus species 4. genus Species 3. Genus species

VOCABULARY REVIEW What is the grouping or arranging things according to a system called? Classify / classification

What is a group of closely related orders? Class

What is a group of closely related genera? Family

What do we call a group of living things that can mate with each other and whose offspring can mate? species

What is the largest classification group? Kingdom

Which classification level has more characteristics in common: order, phylum, or genera? Genera- It is lower on the levels

What tool(s) do taxonomists use to help identify living things? Dichotomous key/ taxonomic key Field guide

What do we call an organism that cannot make its own food? heterotroph

What is a simple cell with no nucleus and many other organelles? prokaryote

What is An organism that is able to produce its own food? autotroph

Identify the correct kingdom for each organism Strept throat- Eubacteria Mushrooms- Fungi Insects- Animalia Microorganisms in hot volcanic ash Archaebacteria A rose Plantae Ameoba, paramecium Protista

Name the 7 levels of classification from general to specific Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus species

Name the current 6 kingdoms Animal Plant Protist Fungus Eubacteria Archaebacteria
