Unity, Diversity, & Evolution
2
Name That Organism
9
Taxonomy The science of classification Based on common characteristics
All living things are grouped into 3 Domains Under Domains there are 7 other levels
10
Levels of Classification
Domain is the largest level Species is the smallest level The more levels that are the same, the more closely related 2 organisms are Together, Genus and species make up the scientific name (Binomial nomenclature) Ex. Homo sapiens
12
Life is arranged into 3 Domains
Diversity Life is arranged into 3 Domains
14
Bacteria are grouped into 2 Kingdoms
Archaebacteria Unicellular Found in extreme environments Eubacteria Unicellular Common
15
Organisms are put in different kingdoms based on:
Can they make their own food? Autotrophs or Heterotrophs What type of cells? How complex? Prokaryotes or Eukaryotes How many cells? Unicellular (1) Multicellular (many)
16
Animals Multicellular Heterotrophs – cannot make their own food
17
Plants Multicellular Autotrophs – make their own food
18
Fungi Most are many cells Cannot make their own food
Most are decomposers
19
Protists Left-overs Things that are not fungi, bacteria, plants or animals
