Lecture on Digital Logic Design www.AssignmentPoint.com www.assignmentpoint.com

OBJECTIVE OF THIS COURS Digital design is concerned with the design of digital electronic circuits. Digital circuits are employed in the design and construction of systems such as digital computers, data communications, digital recording, and many other applications that require digital hardware. This course presents the basic tools for the design of digital circuits and provides the fundamental concepts used in the design of digital systems www.assignmentpoint.com

The first step towards the intriguing digital world! Objective • To introduce the fundamental concepts of digital systems. • To introduce the basic techniques to analyze and design digital logic circuits. • To provide experience designing and building digital logic circuits and programming 8-bit microcontroller. Outcome Able to design, analyze and debug basic digital systems Able to program simple microcontroller Ready to build a simple but real computer www.assignmentpoint.com

CSE - 221 Digital Logic Design 3 Hours/. week 3 Credits Digital logic, Boolean algebra, Boolean function, canonical forms, minimization of Boolean functions, logic gates and their truth tables, combinational logic design, arithmetic and data handling logic circuits. Decoders, encoders, multiplexers, de multiplexers, flip-flops, counters, and registers. Review of set theory, reliable design and fault diagnosis hazards, fault detection in combinational circuits, fault location experiments, threshold logic. Synchronous sequential circuits and iterative networks, sequential machine state equivalence and machine minimization, asynchronous sequential circuits, finite state recognizer-regular expressions. transition graphs. www.assignmentpoint.com

Policies Scheduling Conflicts If you have a conflict for a scheduled Mid term exam with a lower number course, see your instructor within the first three day’s of class. Class attendance and class participation are graded. So, at the end of the semester, if a student is on a borderline between grades, these factors will be considered when deciding the final grade. www.assignmentpoint.com

4 Midterm:-( in—class; closed book) Course Structure 39 lectures & associated readings,Home work arranged into 3 main parts Examinations -(midterm & final) 4 Midterm:-( in—class; closed book) 5 homeworks Students are expected to complete the assigned reading before class! www.assignmentpoint.com

Grading Final Examination: 60% Midterms 35% Evaluations: 5% Homeworks may be up to 24 hours late, Later hand-in of homework not accepted! www.assignmentpoint.com

Analog vs. Digital Analog: values vary over a broad range continuously +5 +5 1 1 Time Time –5 –5 Analog: values vary over a broad range continuously Digital: only discrete values www.assignmentpoint.com

Analog vs. Digital Analog devices process signal that can assume any value across a continuous range and produce results that are also in continuous form. Digital devices process signals that take on only two discrete values such as 0 and 1 and produces output that can be represented by 0 and 1. Examples Analog Devices: solid-state devices TV (except for digital TV), Audio amplifier etc. Digital Devices: Computer, CD player, digital TV, digital cellular phone, electronic calculator, and digital camera. www.assignmentpoint.com

Analog vs. Digital Systems Analog systems: Limited precision, errors accumulate, drift Interface circuits (i.e., sensors & actuators) often analog Digital systems: More accurate and reliable Readily available as self-contained, easy to cascade building blocks Computers use digital circuits internally www.assignmentpoint.com
