Year 5 Parent Meeting Thursday 22nd September 2016

Our aims for the year ahead: Love for learning. Exciting lessons to engage. Children who have a growth mindset approach and want to learn “more”. Parent / teacher relationship. Happy, confident children who take a risk in lessons. Organised and mature approach to school and their home learning.

Our first topic: The Ancient Greeks! We will be learning about: Greek mythology Greek gods and goddesses Amphitheatres – designing and making our own Famous battles and key dates The reach of the Greek empire Olympic games

Other subjects your child will be taught on a weekly/daily basis: Maths and reasoning (different books) Literacy, RWI and SPaG History/Geography Science PE – rugby and dance for the first term Music RE Computing French DT and art

English Writing Content will be topic based Text type focus for one to two weeks Immersion in the text type and content Short pieces of writing, building up to a big piece SPaG Each focus lasts for two-three weeks SPaG will feed into the writing each week Spellings to be learnt at home, in conjunction with our RWI programme – letter pattern or high frequency Reading Weekly focus on the different aspects of reading Comprehension – new skill learnt each week

Reading Independent Reading 10 minutes after lunch and/or first thing in the morning Reading for pleasure Book corner book or library book 5x reading Book band book Reading Record signed by adult Bring in when needing to be changed Bring in on a Friday to contribute towards class percentage Library Slot 30 minute slot each Wednesday Teacher to hear readers

Maths FAST Learning Focus on basic skills such as number bonds and times tables. Aim is for speed and accuracy. Year 4 expectations for times tables is 12 x 12, therefore Year 5 should be fluent by the end of Term 1. Maths Content Written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Place value, fractions, shape, Problem solving and investigation with a focus on explanation and reasoning.

What they will need: Each day: Reading book Named water bottle Named PE kit Spellings log book Each week: To hand in their home learning (two pieces) by Tuesday of each week

PE TWO PE lessons a week: Monday - Tag Rugby (Outdoor) Friday – Dance (Indoor) PE Kit Plain white t-shirt Black shorts/skort/tracksuit bottoms Black sweatshirt (no hood) Trainers (especially for the Winter) or plimsolls Socks! NO EARRINGS please.

Home Learning Regular Home Learning Tasks 5 times reading Learning spellings (for the Monday spelling test) Learning multiplication tables (for the Friday test) One piece of English and one piece of maths based learning (handed out on a Friday, to be returned by Tuesday) Occasional Home Learning Tasks Topic-based projects

Other Useful Information Appointments Via the office please End of the Day Walking pupils out to either top or middle gate on the KS1 playground in first few weeks. Pupils should be collected.
