VHSNC Strengthening Village Health, Sanitation & Nutrition Committee (VHSNC) is known as Gaon Kalyan Samiti (GKS) in Odisha 45407 GKS is operational at Revenue village level Ward Member (President), AWW (Convener) & ASHA (Fa cilitator) are office bearers of GKS Swasthya Kantha – hall mark of GKS at community level Capacity development initiatives More than 1.35 lakh GKS office bearers trained for effective GKS activity implementation. Training on record keeping, thematic issues given to GKS Integration with PR Deptt. for capacity development of GKS Handholding support provided to low performing GKS Web based monitoring system of GKS in place to track information related to GKS activity implementation Sustha Gaon Puraskar is given for best performing GKS

VHSNC integration with Panchayati Raj system More than 12000 GP Sarpanch & PEO are trained for facilitating integration of GKS with PR system. Quarterly GP level meeting conducted by GP Sarpanch to review GKS activities. 3500 GP Health Plan is prepared consolidating of Village Health Plan prepared by GKS GP Health Register is provided to record issues related to health, nutrition ,sanitation & others. Funds mobilized from GP and other sources to implement different need based activities. GP Swasthya Kantha- GP Health information board is established in 2600 GPs. Sustha Panchayat Puraskar is given to 120 GPs for achieving indicators related to health and social determinants of health

Sector level Mini Convention Sensitizes GKS members & other stakeholders on effective GKS activity implementation. Forum for cross learning experiences and sharing of best practices. Handholding support to low performing GKS to expedite utilization of untied fund and submission of SOE. Promote effective inter-sectoral convergence with other line Departments. Demonstration of Model Village Health Plan & GP Health Plan Preparation Encourage GKS & GP for Sustha Gaon & Sustha Panchayat Puraskar

Best practices in VHSNC (GKS) Health check up camps for pregnant women & lactating mother are organized by the effort of GKS & GP Sarpanch. Mass sanitization meeting is organized on vector borne & water borne diseases. Mass blood slide collection for prevention & management of Malaria & Dengue. Mobilization of funds from other sources for undertaking various need based activities at the village level. Provision of light weight stretcher for transportation of pregnant women & emergency patient from home to motorable point. Blood donation Camp are organized by GKS in Cuttack & Khandhamal districts. Sustha Panchayat Puraskar given to best performing GP.

Best practices in VHSNC (GKS) GP Sarpanch, Rasiola designated meeting hall for GKS meeting Funds mobilised for GKS from CSR funds in Keonjhar district GP Swasthya Kantha is being prepared from GP fund. Massive campaign organized involving GKS for the prevention and management of Dengue, Diarrhoea and Malaria GKS played an important role during flood situation management Distribution of LLIN (distribution, monitoring of use and awareness generation) Health check up camp was coordinated by GKS in Naranpur GP of Keonjhar District

Gaon Swasthya Samikshya Objectives Build perception of the community on various dimensions of health and other related problems at community level Promote community level dialogues on health issues and initiate action to address the same Bringing together the efforts of community and service delivery system to promote good health Strengthen forums at different levels for analysis, action and accountability for addressing health issues Coverage 13 Districts, 153 Blocks, 554 GPs (20%) , Around 4600 GKS (20%)

Implementation modalities State level – State Swasthya Samikshya Samiti - Discussion and analysis of health issues and concerns of the district, action, strategic and policy decisions District level – Zilla Swasthya Samiti - Discussion and analysis of health issues, consolidation & submission of Swasthya Suchana Patrika to State, actions for improvement Block level – Block Health Mission - Discussion & analysis of health issues, consolidation & submission of Swasthya Suchana Patrika to District, public hearings (Jana Sambad) GP level - Gram Panchayat meeting - Discussion and analysis of health issues, consolidation & submission of Swasthya Suchana Patrika to Block , sharing of findings in Gram Sabha Revenue village level - Gaon Kalyan Samiti - Discussion and analysis of health issues, consolidation & submission of Swasthya Suchana Patrika to GP

Progress Organized “District level Advocacy Workshop” in 13 GSS districts. State and District TOT conducted to facilitate the programme Monthly meeting (Gaon Swasthya Diwas) is being organized at the village level with the involvement of community people to prepare GKS SSP. Organized quarterly GP level meeting for better inter-sectoral convergence with PR system and consolidation of GKS SSP. Health included as an agenda in the Gram Sabha meeting of PR system. GP SSPs are consolidated at the block level and this is included as an agenda in the Block Health Mission meeting. Jan Sunwai /Jan Sambad are organized at the block level.
