God of wine and theatre… By Jabey and Anya

DIONYSUS Dionysus was the god of the grape harvest, wine, of ritual madness, religious ecstasy and theatre. He was worshipped as early as 1500-100BC by Mycenaean Greek. Many festivals were held in honour of Dionysus: The Lesser or Rural Dionysia, The Greater or City Dionysia, The Anthesteria and the Lenaea.

Dionysus’ Family Dionysus’ mum’s name was Semele. Dionysus’ dad, Zeus fell in love with a mortal. Dionysus had a lot of siblings: Ares, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hebe, Hermes, Hercules, Helen of Troy, Hephaestus, Perseus, Minos The Muses and The Graces. Dionysus went to the underworld to search for his mother, when he finally found her, he had to persuade Hades for her release. In the end, Hades decided to let her go and Semele was sent to Mount Olympus to live with Dionysus.

Facts about Dionysus Dionysus was the last god to enter Olympus. He was the only god to have an immortal parent. He was born in Thebes. He was born of fire and nursed by rain. Upon reaching adulthood, Dionysus wondered the earth, teaching men the culture of wine.
