Clothing in ancient Greece was loose fitting, unlike the tight-fitting outfits worn by those people the Greeks considered barbarians. Both men and women typically wore sleeveless tunics. The women’s tunics were usually ankle length, while the men’s were shorter. For the common person, the color of cloth was plain. Those with the financial resources had their clothing dyed in various colors. During the winter, a heavy wool cloak was worn for warmth. Greeks went barefoot or wore sandals outside the home. Inside the home, they went barefoot.

At the centre of the Acrpolis are the great alters to Athena and Zeus where herds of cattle were sacrificed to the gods. Visit on a feast day and the priest will give you gifts of cooked meat from the altar and a goblet of wine. Walk around between the temples and you will see dozens of statues of gods and heroes from Greek mythology.

Greek Theatres Most Greek men loved to go to the theatre. The plays were part of the festival for the god of wine, Dionysus.

Greek Food Food, for the Greeks, had all sorts of religious and philosophical meaning. The Greeks, to begin with, never ate meat unless it had been sacrificed to a god, or had been hunted in the wild. These are some Greek apples!

According to Greek myth, Zeus was the king of all the gods. Zeus had two brothers and three sisters. When their father died, the boys - Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades - divided the world up between themselves. Zeus took all of the heavens, Poseidon took the sea, and Hades took the underworld. Each was quite content with their selection. Hera was married to Zeus. She was the queen of all the gods, and also the goddess of marriage Poseidon was the Lord of the Sea. His brothers were Zeus - the king of all the gods, and Hades - the king of the underworld.

Hades and Zeus were brothers. Hades had a seat on Mount Olympus, the magical mountain on which all the main gods, the Olympians, lived. But Hades did not live on Mount Olympus. Ares was the son of Zeus and Hera. His father was king, his mother was queen. Zeus was the king of all the gods. And Hermes was Zeus' youngest son. Hermes was born mischievous. Even as a baby, Zeus could tell that Hermes was going to be a whole lot of fun to have around. He liked his son Hermes very much. Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto. She was Apollo's twin sister.

Athena was born without a mother. Her father was the mighty Zeus, king of all the gods. Athena was born directly out of Zeus' brain. Hestia was the goddess of heath and home. Aphrodite was the exception to the Greek God family tree. Some say her parents were unknown, and that she was born of sea foam. Others, like the poet Homer, said she was a daughter of the mighty Zeus, king of all the gods. No one knows quite where to place her on the Greek God family tree Hephaestus was the only Olympian who limped. He was the son of Hera and Zeus. Some say he was born with a limp. Others say Zeus, in a fit of temper, flung him off Mount Olympus when he was just a baby. All the gods knew that Hercules was half man and half god. His mother was a mortal. But his father was a God.
