Lesson Essential Question How do I use my iPad to stay organized as a student. Success Criteria: I can navigate Schoology I can add an event to my calendar. I can create a reminder. Today’s lesson includes a lot of step-by-step directions. It may be easy for students to get lost or confused along the way. Consider modeling the process with your iPad under the document camera so that students can see where/what you are pressing on the iPad as they follow along.

I lost my paper on the bus. My dog ate it! I couldn’t find the directions. It was in my backpack earlier, I promise! Purpose: Today’s lesson will emphasize the benefits of using some of the digital tools for organization. Have students share out some of the reasons/excuses they have seen & heard for not completing schoolwork or turning it in to the teacher. Throughout the lesson, they will see how the iPad is a tool that can help prevent some of these. What are some common reasons you’ve seen for not turning in schoolwork?

Brainstorm: What could be some of its benefits? The iPads are a tool that can help you stay organized and turn in work electronically. Brainstorm: What could be some of its benefits? No more lost papers! No more broken pencils or smudged & crumpled papers! All your work is automatically saved in one spot! You can set reminders to study or complete your assignments! Your teachers will know that you turned in your work on time!

…Let’s start!

Courses Your courses are essentially your online classroom. They connect your classmates, contain your course work, and give you a direct line to your instructor.

Course Material Course materials encompass from lessons and presentations, to assignments and exams. Each course may be organized differently, so the course materials might be listed in the Materials Index, or organized into folders. To access your course's materials, go to the Course Profile by clicking the Courses dropdown menu at the top of the screen and selecting the course you'd like to access.

Calendar The calendar located on the left menu of your Home page is an aggregate of personal, school, group, and course items. The calendar is a great way to keep track of your workload and stay up-to-date with past and upcoming items.

Messages You will be able to receive messages from teachers at your school, and send messages to teachers at your school. When you have a new message in your inbox, the Messages icon on the top menu will display a new number. You'll also see a number next to the Messages area on the left menu of your Home page.

Resources My Resources is your own personal library of documents that you create in Schoology or download from other sites. It's easy to organize, create, and copy/move your resources right from the My Resources page. By saving your documents in this personal library, you'll be able to access them for years to come and use them in any courses you take in the future.

In order to avoid…

Backing-up your files Remember some files on your iPad are automatically saved to your iPad only! If it is something you don’t want to lose, back it up on Schoology or Google Drive.

Next up… The next few slides focus on one way in which the calendar & reminders app can be used to help students stay organized. Your building team may decide to emphasize one over the other, or how much you want to teach the use of these digital tools vs. the student planner & binder system that may already be in place.

Calendar You might choose to use the iPad’s calendar app to keep a digital record of your assignments, tests/quizzes, and upcoming events.

Press & hold on the date/time to add an event to your daily calendar

Set the start and ending times. Write the details of the event or assignment(s) Add each “event” on your daily calendar

Setting Reminders Use the Reminders app to set a digital reminder to study for your test, finish your homework, or even send a thank-you note to your amazing teacher!

What could be some tasks to add to your reminder list?

Your turn!

Success Criteria: Double-check that you can do each of the following items: I can access my Schoology account. I can add an event to my calendar. I can create a reminder.
