Theorist Presentation

Physiological Needs Adolescents take their needs into their own hands, and are much more self- reliant Teens have many choices in terms of the water and food consumption Parents are still relied on to meet their needs, but teens are making choices on how the needs are met

Safety Needs The safety of adolescents is always an important issue to society, and is heightened by the numerous school shootings that have taken place in previous years A safe environment is key for teens who are growing up Many teens will attempt to gain part- time employment, and will want a safe work environment The safety of the few items teens will have purchased themselves is of paramount importance

Love/ Belonging Many teens start to feel the need for intimate, romantic relationships With adolescents still growing, new feelings are sorted out and there is plenty of trial and error Adolescents attempt to separate themselves from their parents (not always physically), as well as separating themselves from their peers at school Friend groups and “in crowds” are formed

Esteem Teens can be very sensitive when it comes to esteem in high school, and are very self- conscience Popularity is most often most important to teens in their social group There are 4 statuses that adolescents can fall into: popular, controversial, rejected, and neglected Since teens often spend more time with their peers at school than their family, so adolescents place a lot of value in what others think of them When peers perceive someone a certain way, it affects how the person thinks of themselves

Self-Actualization Teens seek what is unique about themselves Adolescents are still discovering their abilities, and are looking for their passion, and what they want to do after high school Teens are developing a personal identity

Critics Significant limitation in his methodology Formulated results by a method called biographical analysis Scientific Perspective -> Biased -> opinion based on researcher Focused on self actualized individuals, mostly intelligent white males Difficult to generalize results with the rest of society This Theory assumes that those who have difficulty achieving physiological needs (food, water, shelter etc.) are not capable of meeting growth needs In examination of different cultures in which large # of people live in poverty, it’s proven that people are still capable of higher growth needs such as love and belonging

Strengths Strong intuitive nature The awareness of emotions Supports practitioners in using the theory A flexible, individualized theory that is a dynamic solution to motivating members of an organization Focuses on individuals own constructs and experiences instead of the mentally ill

Relevance to Society Theory has informed scholars in many fields from education to healthcare Continues to be applied to academic disciplines Important contribution to humanistic psychological theory Relevant today in regards of understanding human behaviour and motivation

The unique time period of Adolescence Adolescence depend on the physical needs (food, sleep etc.) to develop properly Need to know that they have a sense of belonging Everything is changing → Puberty → Changing from middle to high school Hardest times of life Many figuring out how they fit into the hierarchy of the place they are in

What can you do!? Parents and adults should ensure that basic needs of a child are met Help them figure out who they are Influence them to be involved! (Sports, Clubs, Committees etc.) Continuous support in everything they do
